When President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Sarge was very calm and kept the chaos under control. When the First Lady asked Sarge to plan the President’s funeral, he accepted and did not rest until he felt that the President had justice. Sarge thought through every aspect of the funeral to make sure it was right. Even when other people attempted to persuade him to go in a different direction, Sarge stuck to his gut and went with his first instincts. With every decision he made, Sarge put the President first. He also tried to be there for the First Lady, to comfort her, in her time of need. Sarge also assisted the new President, Lyndon B. Johnson, who stepped into office. This transition process of was a bit of a hassle for Sarge, but he managed. On the day of the funeral, as guests were arriving, Sarge personally greeted the mourners. Have you ever heard of “One of the most significant presidents ever elected into office?” Death is tragic, but many people have been assassinated. JFK was one of the many to be to be assassinated as a politician, while also being very notable, because of his status in society. He had been president early in his life, very wealthy, and he even had a stunning wife which all men adored, but because of that many men disliked him and were
Involvement with the war in Vietnam started to affect his presidency. Between all the wars, Lyndon increased the population in the American military from 16,300 to 500,000. Johnson was not planning on seeking another
President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was an important American figure in the time he was alive and in his presidency. However, it all came to a very violent end. The President was going from state to state trying to get people to vote for him in the next election. He was at a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. At around 12:30 in the afternoon, gunshots came from behind the cars and struck the president in the back of the head (“JFK Assassination”).
The use of allusion in the two poems “The History Teacher by Billy Collins and “Outdistanced” by Larry Rubin punctuate the shared theme that that a willful lack of self-awareness can quickly lead to a greater ignorance of what could shape humanity. Throughout both poems, allusion is applied in order to create the theme that ignorance, due to a lack of self-awareness, can shape humanity. In Collins’ poem, a history teacher tries and fails to disseminate the misinformation that there is no violence in history in order to protect the innocence of his pupils. However, this severe lack of wisdom leads to the, “torment of the weak/ and the smart,” (lines 14-15) on the playground.
Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency started and ended with immense sorrow, being that he was one of four vice presidents sworn in after the death of a president. After the death of John. F. Kennedy, the nation needed continuity and stability. Johnson took charge and advanced not only the Kennedy legacy, but his own as well, becoming one of the most influential presidents in history.
In Flannery O'Connor's short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find" contains situational irony. This story, as in most of O'Connor's stories, the irony being a tool that is used throughout all her writings to illustrate the central conflict. Thus O'Connor's tool had not been in the story "A Good Man is Hard to Find" she uses the irony to paint the picture of the transitioning interaction between the main characters, The Misfit and the grandmother. It is my contention that in the story " A Good Man Is Hard to Find," took the role of highlighting how the fear of death seems to change a person's character for the better. The irony functions as a conduit for the reader to reflect on their personal character by relating to the changes in the grandmother
“A Good Man Is Hard To Find,” by Flannery O’Connor, is a short story about a stubborn grandmother that has her whole family killed by an escaped prisoner named the Misfit. This story is a work of theological literature that shows that violence can be an act of religious faith rather than simply pleasure. At first, the Misfit is portrayed as a psychopath murdering people for the fun of it but that is not true. He actually says that “It’s no real pressure in life (22).”
A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor is a short story that expresses the many different literary devices. The ones that appear throughout are symbolism, foreshadowing, and irony. O’Connor shows how there is always more to the words that are spoken than just what the ear allows to be heard. Through these devices, O’Connor reveals to the reader the deeper meaning behind the words and how the words express grace that then leads to salvation. O’Connor really tests the audience’s focus with her symbolism techniques because she makes the reader have to find the truth and go beyond the text.
"A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor is a short story that portrays a family's vacation to Florida that is quickly turned into a nightmare when they meet with the Misfit, a convict who escaped from prison. O'Connor made use of irony through her characters to symbolize a concept of class-consciousness. When reading the story, the grandmother is depicted as a woman who is upright and have Christian values but as you keep reading the story the author shines light on other issues the grandmother has. She seems to act as if she is “better” than others and the people she encounters. Although now she has a family of her own, she criticizes her son Baily and how he raises his kids and says “In my time children were more respectful of
In the short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” Flannery O’Connor explores the perception of what makes a person good, diving into the realms of religion, fear, and selfishness. The reader is submerged deeper into what the word ‘good’ truly means, while O’Connor reveals the grandmother’s corrupt version of this process through character development, symbols, and the theme of selfishness, proving The Misfit to be more ‘good’ than the grandmother and her family. One of O'Connor's best, yet considerably violent, stories depicts the brutal killing of a family on vacation by a notorious murderer dubbed The Misfit. O’Connor’s character development throughout the story helps reveal The Misfit’s twisted - yet in his view, acceptable - moral
In “A Teachable Good Book: Of Mice and Men” by Thomas Scareth, the author’s purpose is to show the reader that Of Mice and Men is great tragic literature that provides the reader with many complex ideas through a simple story. One point Scareth makes is that sometimes tragedies are needed to show a positive about humanity when he says the story is,”but a tragedy in the classic Aristotelian/Shakespearean sense of showing humanity’s achievement of greatness through and in spite of defeat.” Scareth explains humans can do good things through seemingly bad things. Achievements can be made even through turmoil. I agree with this point because while George does something horrible, killing Lennie, it is done out of love and his need to protect him.
In the story "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, there is no doubt the reader should consider the grandmother a villain. Throughout the story, it is easy to assume the grandmother would eventually lead the family to some sort of downfall. The grandmother has many traits that make her a villain, and through her judgemental nature, selfish acts, and inability to stop talking, she leads her family and herself to their death. Throughout the story it is obvious that the grandmother is very judgemental of people and seems to consider herself as better than everyone.
In the 1953 short story titled “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, readers are given a glimpse of what the end of the story may look like through use of foreshadowing, symbolism, and other literary techniques. Although the story looks to be an innocent story of a family who travels to Florida for vacation at the start of it, readers soon find out that the story has a darker twist to it. This family trip turns violent and this gruesome ending can easily represent the violence taking place in America during the time this story was written by O’Connor and even today. The short story starts off with a family of six- parents, a grandmother, and three children-
According to the article “Created Equal”, Milton and Rose Friedman discusse three different ways that are considered to be equal. It includes equality before God, equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. They also believe that the “freedom preserves the opportunity for today’s disadvantaged to become tomorrow’s privileged in the process, enable almost everyone, from top to bottom, to enjoy a fuller and richer life.” Finally, Friedmans conclude that a society that puts equality before freedom will get neither, and those that put freedom before equality will get a high degree of both. From my point of view, I do agree with Friedmans that equality of outcome is in clear conflict with liberty which government gets more power and getting bigger.
