Authors use these comparisons to convey their ideas and opinions through expressive word pictures. In the text, examples of similes are "a young woman in slacks, whose face was as broad and as innocent as a cabbage and was tied around with a green head-kerchief that had two points on the top like rabbit's ears” (O’Conner). This simile, together with the previous words, stress the mother's fairness and novelty, making it fairly easy for her family members to manipulate her. “There were two more pistol reports and the grandmother raised her head like a parched old turkey hen crying for water and called,” (O’Conner). This simile makes a direct description of how the grandmother quickly raised her head up. Metaphors are a figure of speech which makes an implied or hidden comparison between two unrelated things but share some common characteristics (Metaphor). Metaphors allow for authors to be creative and to express the distinction of emotions and images. First, one of the main themes in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is manipulation (or, more accurately, attempted manipulation) can be a person’s fatal flaw. The grandmother is manipulative through the duration of the story. She tries to maneuver the family out of the idea of taking their vacation in Florida, and she fails (137). She also attempts to manipulate The Misfit, but ultimately, that act was her downfall.
Misunderstandings As represented in the story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O 'Connor, a good man was hard to be and had different ideas of how to pursue it. Going through the journey with the grandmother and son and learning about the Misfit, the audience can witness the actions being made by different characters to witness their fall and/or their triumph. When looking into the grandmother more deeply, the audience can detect the intensity of her self absorption. She would consider herself a lady with high standards of herself.
In her short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” Flannery O’Connor is brutally honest in confronting her audience, which presumably differs from her staunch Catholic point of view. Using elements of distortion and exaggeration, O’Connor points out the atrocities of the world she and her audience live in—America in the 1950s and 60s. Racial tensions and political decisions proved divisive, corrupting and splitting America. O’Connor believes that her audience was part of the self-righteous, judgmental, and morally corrupt divisions of America—divisions embodied by the main character: the grandmother. O’Connor writes with great conviction to convey the idea that even the most unlikely of people, including those with great obstacles to salvation,

Flannery O’Connor, an American short story writer, grapples with the ethical dilemma of good versus evil and its relation to moral beliefs in most of her works. Most notably, in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, Bailey, June Star, John Wesley, the grandmother, and the mother are killed by The Misfit, an escaped criminal, in search of a plantation. Being the last family member alive, the grandmother struggles to find her moral compass while facing the Misfit. She explains her belief in Christian values to escape death. However, the Misfit finds her moral justification superficial, ultimately murdering the grandmother for her lack of moral fortitude during her face with death.

Flannery O’Connor uses her deep and substantial words to unleash a deeper meaning within her writing “A Good Man Is Hard To Find.” Although there were many cultural conflicts amongst the story, racism is a very strongly expressed concern in the text due to the generational differences between the Grandmother and the family. Her most popular being “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” O’Connor’s belief in religion is reflected in this story through the grandmother and her values, and it also includes a theme about what a “good man” is. Throughout the course of literature class, we have to read articles, stories, and poems then analyze them and make a response toward a few questions on the readings. One story that caught my attention and intrigues me the most is “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” by Flannery O’Connor. The story is about a family that consists of a Grandmother that is selfish, a critic, demanding, and determine to get whatever she wants. Bailey is the son of the grandmother and the father of June Star and John Wesley. Bailey mostly ignores his mom for many reasons but overall is very quiet.
