Sometimes, people manipulate others in order to obtain their goal. In the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, by Flannery O’Conner, portrays a grandmother as a witch, trying to influence others to their will. The manipulative grandmother leads her family to danger, causing the death of everybody, when she decides to join them on their trip to Florida. The grandmother, not wanting to go to Florida for vacation, first tries to convince her son, Bailey, to go to Tennessee instead of Florida, “seizing every chance to change Bailey’s mind” (138). However, when Bailey ignores her request, she makes an attempt to persuade the other family members by recalling a newspaper, stating “The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida...I …show more content…

Unlike anyone else in the family, she dresses up the best, foreshadowing the death of her and her family. The grandmother’s choice of nice clothing can be perceived that Judgement Day will come very soon. More events depict the grandmother as a witch, who manipulates her family into doing what she wants. Because the grandmother symbolizes a witch, history claims that witches have made contact with the devil. Every time she tells a story to the children, she “rolled her eyes and screwed up her mouth...and waved her head and was very dramatic” (139-140), the signs of the devil’s possession. However, her praying and influence do not take effect on the Misfit. Her persuasion stops, and the grandmother is now facing death. She does not feel prepared to die. However, the grandmother tries her very last manipulation on the Misfit, murmuring “‘Why you’re one of my babies’…[touching] him on the shoulder” (153). Caught by surprise, the “Misfit [springs] back...and [shoots] her three times through the chest” (153), ending her life as a witch.
