Possessed. Helpers. Spirits. That is what animals were being called in 1692, the year of the Salem Witch Trials. Animals were as guilty as the witches that everyone was hunting for. Even though there was a list of what animals that were being possessed by the witches, it was mostly dogs who were being executed. Many domestic animals were killed, dogs especially the main target to witches, a lot of dogs died in the eight months that this was happening, only two were actually shot, the other times were because of sickness. One execution began in October 1692 between a girl and her neighbor’s dog. No one knows why she did it, but she yelled saying that the dog was trying to bewitch her. Of course, people believed the little girl and they killed the dog instantly. It wasn’t until after that the townsmen said that the dog was innocent and shouldn’t have been killed. These people always just assumed that the animals were possessed. “Mather reasoned that if the dog really was the devil in disguise, it would not be possible to kill it. Since the dog did die, Mather determined it was not bewitched and was therefore innocent,”(Brooks) . The people who were executed in 1692 had a word what they wanted to say, they would try to say that they are innocent and that they aren’t witches, and then got executed, but the animals didn’t, they didn’t have a say, to the humans they were guilty till the person found out that the creature was innocent. Not all people got a say, but it would be their chose to say why they should not be killed. A man was put to death after to refuse that he didn’t want to say anything. People were victims in the same way as the animals and it proves how awful the Salem Witch Trials
