“Monsters” by Anna Quindlen is a short story about a mother who is told by her son that he believes a monster is under his bed. In the story the mother had been waiting for the monster and expected that it would have shown up four years earlier. She also believed that the monster would be large and hairy with sharp teeth. In the story the mother tries to calm her son’s fears by assuring him that she and his father would never let a monster into the house and showing her son that he could make friends with the monster by offering it tootsie rolls.
