When Salva finally made it to the internment camp he was all alone (67). Family is like the roots that keep you grounded. I couldn't imagine getting to an internment camp and not even having my family by my side. Salva had to walk a year and a half just to get to a different camp in Kenya (78). While first world teenagers are focusing on going to school and playing a sport, third world countries teenagers are wandering for almost two years straight just to stay alive.

As a "lost boy" refugee, he must journey on foot across Africa, searching for his family and safety. After surviving three refugee camps, Salva has been allowed to escape the war for a lifetime. Because many of the camps he stayed in were closed, Salva had to travel to other camps.
In South Sudan around 2 million people died and this time period was considered a genocide. Salva was one of the many people that were struggling during this period of time. “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, is a book about how Salva had to leave his home and family due to a war, he was joined by people along the way of his journey, but really only had himself as support and motivation to keep going and not give up despite how hard it was. Salve faced many hardships during his youth including crossing the Akobo desert, crossing rivers, and never having clean water. Salva and almost all of Sudan had no easy access to water, people had to walk for hours on end just to get dirty water.
