Giana Diaz In A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park, characters face many challenges and use their inner strength to overcome them. During a time of conflict in Sudan, Salva uses his inner strength to find his family and to keep going. A theme that is present throughout this novel is that people with inner strength always find a way to keep going. Salva demonstrates this by using his strength to stay strong, to find his family, continuing the journey to Ethiopia, and by using his uncle's words as his inner strength to keep going. Salva uses his inner strength as courage to stay strong in order to find his family. This is seen in the beginning of the book when Salva is at the rebel camp and the soldiers order them to separate into two groups, men in one group and women, children, and elderly in the other group. Salva sees someone his age entering the men’s group, so he follows. When he tries to enter, that is when a soldier points a gun at his face. “If I die now, I will never see my family again. Salva is trying to figure out what to do with his life now, and he finds himself losing hope. When Salva loses hope, Salva remembers his uncle's words. “Whenever he found himself losing hope, Salva would take a deep breath and think of uncle’s words. One step at a time. One problem at a time-just figure out this one problem” (Park 110). This quote shows that Salva still remembers his uncle's words years later. His uncle’s words are his inner strength and they keep him going day by day. He just has to figure out one problem at a time, he tells himself, and he gets through the day. Salva definitely showed inner strength because he thinks about positive words from his uncle day by day. Salva has proven again and again that his inner strength keeps him going every
“’Eh, Nephew!’ he said in a cheerful voice. We are together now, so I will look after you.’” (pg 35 chpt 6) Help from loved ones is essential for Salva’s survival. Support from his uncle helped his mental
Salva lived under the image of his whole family being killed, until he found his father many years later. Salva, the main character in Linda Sue Park’s A Long Walk to Water is able to survive and overcome a variety of challenges through being efficient, intelligent , and by listening to the group's leaders. Salva survives the first few challenges because, he was extremely Intelligent. For example he ran into the bush to escape the gunfire.
Uncle told him “A step at a time. One problem at a time-just figure out this problem.” This helped Salva get through many many other obstacles as well. Another example happens later in the book when Uncle dies and the rest of the group starts treating Salva badly. Salva perseveres and manages to deal with the leftover scraps that they grudgingly give him.
There are so many countries in the world that face many hardships. In the book “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, a character faces many obstacles while living in Southern Sudan. These hardships include family loss, water issues, and ongoing war. Salva faced a lot of hardships, but family loss sticks out because he is only eleven and he has never been without them for a period of time like this. For example, A Long Walk to Water states, “As Salva walked, the same thoughts kept going through his head in rhythm with his steps.
On this journey of running from war he lost his group of people that are Dinka’s that he was with and stayed in a barn with a woman. He also couldn’t find any of his family at this hard time but when he found a new group of Dinka’s to stay with Salva had found his Uncle. He also made a really good friend. Until they both died and Salva was by himself again with nobody he knew. Some hardships that Salva faced during this time in A Long Walk to Water were lots of water problems, wild animals, and no family.
Salva's long journey away from the war, surviving the deaths of Marial, Uncle, and others around him(p.65). He was also nearly killed several times, and he may have felt unhappy and wanted to give up many times. But when he remembered how much his Uncle had cheered him up and how happy he was with Marial, he knew he had to keep going. He'd been through a lot of ups and downs. When Salva is adopted by a family in the United States, he faces the challenge of entering a new world, a new life with the same qualities: resourcefulness and courage, gratitude and perseverance, hopefulness, and a resolve to make a difference.
When Salva was walking with the only family he had, his uncle, they got robbed. The robbers captured his uncle and shot him right before Slava’s eyes (63). That tragic event would leave most people in shambles, but Salva, he kept going. Salva and Nya went through many hardships but they never let that get in their way. We can all learn a thing or two from these resilient
According to the text, it states “If I die now, I will never see my family again. Somehow, this thought strengthened him enough to keep him from collapsing in terror.” Salva was very persistent because he reminded himself of his motivation: finally reuniting with his family. If it wasn’t for Salva’s self-determination, he would not have survived or found his family. Furthermore, Salva thinks, “I am alone now.
(pg 73) This shows that Salva is persevering because even though he hates the refugee camp, he
Throughout the novel Salva demonstrates determination by pushing himself to do his best and not give up on anything no mater what is going on. One instance where Salva showed determination is on page 65, paragraph 4. “Marial was gone. Uncle was gone, too, murdered by those Nuer men right before salva’s eyes. Marial and uncle were no longer by his side, and they never would be again, but salva knew that both of them would have wanted him to survive,to finish the trip and reach the itang refugee camp safely.
Now he has to travel the desert. These next 3 paragraphs are about the traits that Salva has used to survive the desert. First, Salva’s hard work saved his life in the desert. In the story Salva grows closer to an older woman ‘Auntie’ and works to not burden her. ‘Salva stayed in the woman’s barn again that night...water from the pond.’
Salva changes due to his decisions and becomes an independent, resilient, and caring person, which is important because understanding choices and their consequences can change how people perceive themselves and the world. For instance, Salva changed due to his choices and their consequences by becoming more independent. To illustrate this point, after Salva’s group abandoned him with an
One of the reasons they struggled so much is due to lack of water. As stated above the heat and harsh conditions that they had to live through for the 3 day walk was intense and challenging. Salva might not have been able to do it without his Uncle’s motivational tactics to get him through
Also when Salva's uncle joined the group he was in, Salva relied on his uncle to look after and protect him. This is proved on Page 35 when the text said, “Uncle was quiet for a moment. Then he patted Salva’s shoulder. “Eh, Nephew!”
(43) This means Salva is an achiever because instead of not helping because he was a child, he helped all the adults and got reeds. Salva leads a group of thousands of boys to Kenya with his dedication and determination. The text states “I will get us safely to Kenya, he thought. No matter how hard it is” (81) This demonstrates Salva being a hard-worker because he is helping thousands of boys cross to Kenya.
