Sacrificing something is really hard to do. What if you had to sacrifice your family, food and water. Some people would say “How would you Survive.” In the novel A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park a young boy named Salva Dut had to flee his home in South Sudan because of war. Salva has no food, water and doesn't have his family. Salva grows from a confused and scared person to a confident person and a leader. In the beginning of the book Salva is Confused.Once Salva realized that the soldiers from the North were right outside his school he was confused. He was in a group of many kids and had no idea what to do.In the book it says “Salva was near the end of the line. He felt his heart beating so hard that its pulse pounded in his throat and ear. He wanted to shout, “I needed to go home! I must go home!” But the words were blocked by the wild thumping of his throat.” (Park 7). Salva was escaping the school, and trying to get home. A part where he is confident is after his Uncle got shot by the soldiers from the North. In the book it says “Despite the numbness in his heart, Salva was amazed to find himself walking faster and more boldly than he had before.”(Park 65). It also says “Salva lifted his head proudly. They are wrong and I will prove It.” (Park 66). Salva was trying to lead 1,500 boys from his village to safety, while trying to survive himself. Salva lived under the image of his whole family being killed, until he found his father many years later. Salva, the main character in Linda Sue Park’s A Long Walk to Water is able to survive and overcome a variety of challenges through being efficient, intelligent , and by listening to the group's leaders. Salva survives the first few challenges because, he was extremely Intelligent. For example he ran into the bush to escape the gunfire.
In the book, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, Salva learns it is okay to rely on others for help. This essay view’s on how Salva was able to make it through the desert, despite all the difficulties, using motivating words from his uncle. “He had to slow down, and for the first time on the long journey, he had began to lag behind the group.” (Linda Sue Park,53) At this point in the walk through the Akobo Desert Salva was behind the group thirsty, injured, and tired, not sure if he could keep walking.

Firstly his determination, with Salva’s determination, he manages to escape to the bush, and begin his long walk to refuge. At the beginning of the book ‘A Long Walk To Water’ Salva calmed himself down to focus, think and escape “Boom! Salva turned and looked. Behind him, a huge black cloud of smoke… Salva lowered his head and ran”(Park pg 8, 11) In addition, even after his best friend Marial passed he kept walking, and walking.
Due to his fearfulness, he starts to act fragile until he eventually encounters a hardship, in which his uncle, Jewiir, forces him to continue walking through the Okobo desert. This teaches him a lesson and tactic he uses to lead the lost boys through Sudan to Kenya to get to another refugee camp for survival. This lesson taught by his uncle also helps shape Salva’s character. Shaping his character also forces him to persevere more.
On this journey of running from war he lost his group of people that are Dinka’s that he was with and stayed in a barn with a woman. He also couldn’t find any of his family at this hard time but when he found a new group of Dinka’s to stay with Salva had found his Uncle. He also made a really good friend. Until they both died and Salva was by himself again with nobody he knew. Some hardships that Salva faced during this time in A Long Walk to Water were lots of water problems, wild animals, and no family.

To sum up, Salva did make it through the stressful journey, Salva has been back and forth visiting his biological family and his forster family that lives in New York.. This journey lead him to the person he is today by inspiring people to not give up on a dream or idea they had. Today Salva is continuing a program for South Sudan “ Water For South Sudan” which builds wells in different villages in South
Throughout the novel Salva demonstrates determination by pushing himself to do his best and not give up on anything no mater what is going on. One instance where Salva showed determination is on page 65, paragraph 4. “Marial was gone. Uncle was gone, too, murdered by those Nuer men right before salva’s eyes. Marial and uncle were no longer by his side,and they never would be again,but salva knew that both of them would have wanted him to survive,to finish the trip and reach the itang refugee camp safely.
One of the reasons they struggled so much is due to lack of water. As stated above the heat and harsh conditions that they had to live through for the 3 day walk was intense and challenging. Salva might not have been able to do it without his Uncle’s motivational tactics to get him through
Salva’s labor shows he will do anything to survive, and nothing will stop him. Once Salva started walking, another factor of his survival kicked in, He was a very lucky young boy. His uncle was one of the most influential and supportive people in his life and he helped Salva throughout his journey. At one point, he was reunited with his uncle who had left to fight in the war he felt safe and he depended on his uncle for anything. This shows that his uncle was very caring, helpful and encouraging. In the book it says “ Salva shook his head, unable to imagine what life would be like in the camp without Uncle.” (?).
