Monsters aren't just dreams, they can feel real. In Patrick Ness’s book “A Monster Calls” a boy named Conor has a nightmare that changes his life. Connor's mum has a bad case of cancer. Conor’s nightmare is about a Yew Tree that he thinks can help cure his mum. The monster was called by Conor, but Conor doesn’t know why so the monster tells Conor stories about his journey and who he's helped. Family is a curse because conor’s dad left him at a young age, Connor’s mum is sick and isn’t getting better, and Connor and his grandma don't get along very well.

Connor’s dad doesn’t have a healthy relationship with Conor. When Conor’s grandma said that his dad was coming for a while he just reacted by saying “why is dad coming” meaning his dad doesn’t
