Writing a text cannot be done without the comprehension of its register, should the desired goal be accomplished. The writing done in research papers and children’s books look nothing alike, and the same goes within the academical field itself. This is due to the endless registers and styles existing. Choosing one register leads naturally to an appropriate style and vice versa. Therefore, this paper will look at how the style in "A psychological romance" by Daisy Hay and "One night stands in the USA" by Mary Beard are caused by their different types of registers. Furthermore, this will be done through comparative analysis.
The topic in "A psychological romance" is about Disraeli where the main focus lies in O’Kell’s book about him. The text

Hence, Mary Beard uses a generalised register belonging to blogging. Evidently, this creates an informal tenor in Beard’s text when looking at its structure and style. The usage of abbreviations, contractions, slang and exclamation marks. Through this informal tenor, specialised registers of different sorts are used. Beard uses the words “night lecture” (line 12), “students, and colleagues…” (line 10-11) and “rewriting and redoing the power point” (line 27), showing a teaching register. With the usage of the words choices “they’ll do their job…” (line 17), “different skills” (line 20) and “This is my job” (line 28) it shows how work register is included. Lastly, the inclusion of the words, “commercial motive” (line 9), “publicizing, selling, and generally representing your book” (line 16), “representing” (l. 16) and “PR” (line 22), shows the usage of specialised commercial register. As the text talks about Beards own life within a social platform, her usage of informal tenor and these specialised registers are needed in order to maintain coherency for the reader. Using these specialised register enables comprehension of Beard’s daily life as a professional. With the teaching and work register, the detailed encounter of Beard’s work becomes relatable, where the commercial register shows the different aspects that are part of the nuances in Beard’s …show more content…
Their comparisons are found in their modes and variations. Both texts use the writing mode, although one is a blog and the other is a review. Both texts also use the same variation in the language us they both use American English in their writing. However, their differences are plenty as a result of their different registers altering the styles they must use. In "A psychological romance" the register used goes under academia as it analyses O’Kell’s study of Disraeli. In contrast to that, "One night stands in the USA" has a register showing the authors line of work and the conditions within it. This leads to "A psychological romance" having a formal tenor where specific terms must be included and the audience leaning towards the academical field, whereas "One night stands in the USA" is opposite. It uses informal tenor with terms that are not excluding in their
“They’ll turn us into writing robots”, a student contends against the use templates influencing the structure of their essays. (10) In the book “They Say/ I Say”: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein insist that the use of their relevant templates provide tools that will enhance the readers writing skills. These templates provide an exemplary format that one can use when writing an essay. Graff and Birkenstein suggests that, “Instead of focusing solely on abstract principles of writing, then, this book offers model templates that help you put those principles directly into practice.”
The author of "Simplicity," William Zinsser has discovered that writing frequently deals with clutter. He makes it obvious in his essay that writing "fuzz" and clutter can annoy and weary a reader. Zinsser emphasizes that clutter in writing not only frustrates readers but also obscures the intended message. He argues that simplicity is key to effective communication, as it allows ideas to shine through and resonate with the audience. Zinsser provides examples of how "clutter" or “fuzz” is harmful to both the writer and his audience, as well as a resource for messy writing.
This component of her writing style gives her audience information to take in and formulate opinions on. These components also add value to the purpose of her essay and add to her
In Chapter One of Thomas Cooley’s The Norton Sampler: Short Essays for Composition, the audience was exposed to several strategies recommended for reading pieces of literature. These strategies were divided into three segments: Previewing the Text, Reading Closely and Critically, and Responding to What You Read. Each segment contained a list of either advice or questions the reader could heed to while analyzing their given text. Later, the chapter exposed the audience to the four traditional types of writing utilized.
Authors use rhetorical strategies to express themes in their writing. Different rhetorical strategies help convey different themes with varying degrees of effectiveness. One way to determine the effectiveness of an author’s style is to compare their works to another. In order to determine whether Nancy Mairs or James Baldwin is more effective, it is necessary to evaluate the two side by side.
Research papers require a lot of critical thinking, planning, and research. First, one needs an interesting topic. Then, one needs at least one critical reading strategy to analyze the literary works in the topic. Finally, one needs to do preliminary research and write a basic thesis statement. After that, one has the beginning of a good research paper.
Both authors use personal language to ensure that the reader feels secure about the argument that the writer is trying to
In this short passage by William Zinsser, Zinsser used compare and contrast to inform the readers about his personal opinions of being a writer. Due to different understandings and opinions on how to be a good writer, Zinsser decided to use compare and contrast in order to present a clean and detailed differences to the reader about how different people’s writing style can vary. By doing this, it would be extremely helpful for the readers to distinguish the differences of each writing style, see the benefits and disadvantages, and ultimately gather enough information to decide which style fits them the best. At the panel with Dr. Brock, Zinsser gave the audience a broader view of different writing styles and how they contribute differently.
After reading the first chapter, writing with Style, from “Thinking Well”, by John R. Trimble, he made it seem as if he was writing about my writing when he explained a novice writer. Trimble explains how a novice writer would write by giving examples of how their style of writing looks like. For example, Trimble explains how new writers unconsciously write and how they are not aware of their egocentrism. He states what a novice would have to achieve objectivity, empathy, courtesy and social sensitivity in order for him to have a readable style. Trimble then discusses what makes a veteran writer and how their thinking process reflects their writing situation.
This sentence style shows the author’s thinking process at the moment, rather than tells a story. Besides fragmented sentences, sections are also unchronological and seem irrelative to each other, attracting readers to read
The novel also makes a unyielding point about the dangers of consumerism, emphasizing how creativity and individualism can be reduced by allowing the government and media to think for them. Perhaps the most important feature of the book is that readers understand the value of imagination and cultural heritage. These points would not be understood or accepted by readers if the novel failed to follow narrative structure, which is undeniably the most important aspect of any literary

The use of these tactics allow for the the author to convey his purpose and message in such a way that it is not immediately rejected and the thought remains a possibility to be thought
With their similarities in writing styles, we see the struggle that the human mind goes through when dealing with dark obsession, an important aspect of the human condition. There are also some differences, for instance, there is death in both but they are a bit different, and one of the narrators has more control of their situation than the other. Not everything is as it appears, for example in Poe’s “Tell-Tale Heart.”
In contrast to that, various examples have legitimized the use of first-person pronouns in English academic writing. Also, second person pronouns remarkably demonstrate the presence of informality in any given piece of academic writing. The second person pronouns create much of a conversation than the unintended academic writing (Biber et al. 32).this is ideally because it evokes interactional skills. In some cases, writers may use the second person pronoun with a semantic reference that is wider, concerning people in general.
