Crying is your baby’s way of shutting out sights, sounds, and any other sensations that may be too intense for him and it helps him deal with his frustration. As parents, you can influence the length of time that your baby cries by responding to him and this has been proven by studies. It is important to realise that every baby is unique. Your baby may be a very calm and well-behaved individual or he may have fussy periods throughout the day even when there are no obvious reasons for it. Do not disturb – this type of cry sounds very similar to a hunger cry, and is usually baby’s way of letting out some steam. It won’t take long before you have a pretty good idea of what your baby’s cries are trying to tell you. If you can attend to him immediately, he will feel better and will most likely stop crying. Failing to respond to his cries, on the other hand, can worsen the situation. However, it is possible for different types of cries to overlap. For example, newborns may awaken feeling hungry and start crying for food. If you take too long to respond, his crying will probably change to one of rage and frustration! The best method to deal with your baby crying is by responding as quickly as possible to any of his cries during the first few months of his life. In infancy, the baby will not use words to convey their ideas. Feeding, sleeping, self-soothing, and development of social abilities are the main expectations. Infants are constantly evolving to reactions and abilities to meet these expectations. After children become toddlers, they have significant progress in the field of communication and movement.

One of the main theories in Developmental psychology is the attachment theory that was devised by Bowlby (1969) and was added to in 1973, by Mary Ainsworth. The attachment theory surrounds the bond between a primary care giver and a baby. They believe that attachment is a deep and enduring emotional bond that connects one person to another across time and space. In 1930 Bowlby worked as a psychiatrist in a children’s unit, where he treated many emotionally disturbed children, this lead him to consider the relationship between mother and child and the impact that could have on the child’s development. Bowlby believed that the attachment process was an all or nothing process and that you either were attached or were not attached.
Infants will cry to begin interaction with the caregiver; when the caregiver responds properly, the crying will encourage attachment behaviors (Fannin and Hamblett, 2006). Research of over the course 30 years showed that infants are far more competent, social, and responsive and are able to make sense of their environment. Infants are no longer regarded as passive and do not only respond to stimuli (Fantz, 1963). The theory of attachment that was first proposed by John Bowlby (1970) described it as a ‘lasting psychological connectedness between human beings’. The first year of a child’s life is spent communicating entirely through nonverbal means. Infants use every part of their bodies to convey their wants and needs as their parents and early childhood educators respond to meet them. Examples of this are reflexes, such as opening their mouths when hungry. Also, crying and whole body movements to demonstrate feelings. Another way that is interesting in infant nonverbal communication is allowing infants to play with each other.
