The book talks about the journey of animals from being companions to a source of livelihoods. It tells us why different animals were domesticated in different parts of the country and by different communities in areas with different patterns of biodiversity. There are different ways to feed different animals and they are in turn used for different purposes. We get a lot of products from animals. Animals also represent wealth, power and domination where they are used as a status symbol and even given as dowry and gifts. The animals who demonstrated status were given more preference in the ancient texts and not those who were herded by the common people. India has a large range of breeds within different species of animals. It is because of the rich biodiversity. There are also traditional ways of rearing livestock. A lot of systems of livestock rearing prevail in our country. Certain mythological texts also talk about certain animals and their worth. There was an affect of colonization on animal rearing and the livelihoods of people. It talks about how different animals are selected on the basis of the purpose they will later serve. There are different types of grasslands in our country. Animal health care is also a matter of concern and it is even mentioned in texts like Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha. It also talks about the negative impact of the attempts to restore grasslands. Better training should be provided to health workers and preventive medicines should be strengthened. It talks about the drawbacks in the health care system, the need to initiate research, a new credit mechanism at the village level, strong local markets, a nationalized breeding policy, a well designed legislation and more involvement of local communities in the decision making process and the necessity to combine both modern and traditional methods of livestock
