An expedition was ordered by King Philip II of Spain after the Philippines was first discovered by the earlier explorers, namely Ferdinand Magellan and Ruy Lopez De Villalobos in 1521 and 1543. Luis de Velasco, the viceroy of New Spain, commissioned Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1564 to lead an expedition in the Pacific Ocean. King Philip II wrote a letter to Fray Andres de Urdaneta to join the expedition and offering him the command, for he was so experienced and excellent cosmographer. Urdaneta agreed to accompany the expedition but refused to take command, which gives Miguel Lopez de Legazpi the right to be the commander. His voyage reached the island of Cebu, where he also anchored. At first he was received peacefully by the natives and by their chief Tupas, but later they had a conflict that results of trying to kill each other, for the Spaniards having seized their provisions, the natives fight back but the Spaniards conquered and …show more content…

Aside from that they want to discover the world, the path, the way, to the other islands, where eventually they will conquer. Like the earlier explorer, these were also the goals of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, but after reading the article I never knew that he was different from the others. The only thing that I am not sure about is the part between Tupas and Legazpi. It was confusing for me. Is Legazpi was welcome well or not? All I know is at the end, they had a treaty and the natives were treated nicely by Legazpi like a father for them. I agree and believe in the intention of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi’s friendship and peace for the natives was genuine; although in some instances he used force to conquer some province. He governed the Philippines in good path in which the natives learned a lot. He made many good changes which is the reason why people love him. The article made him a noble man for me and not a greedy
