Introduction
Corporate social responsibility is defined by Lange and Washburn (2012) as the “focus on the meaning of and expectations for responsible behaviour rather than the meaning of irresponsible behaviour”.
Corporate social responsibility requires business organisations to encompass “the economic, legal, ethical, and discretionary (philanthropic) expectations that society has of organizations at a given point in time” (Bucholtz & Carrol, 2008, p. 40)
This assignment will be discussing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and how it is implemented in business, specifically, hospitality orientated companies, and also how successful it can be. A case study will then be analysed and discussed, based on two given questions.
According to Hospitality Net, there was an increase from 63 to 139 CSR and environmental news items between 1999 and 2007, which is a very substantial growth compared to other industries. Larger companies such as Hilton, Starwood and McDonald’s are actively providing CSR-related reports and therefore promoting themselves almost as CSR promoters. This pushes other companies, their competitors, to take on CSR initiatives in order to compete with them, and therefore helping the effect the hospitality industry is having on the world, through environmental and CSR activities.
