The iron industry was a very well known industry. The iron mines in
Minnesota were the biggest in the world.
The iron industry started when one of the Meritt brothers found iron samples in the dirt when he was taking care of the woods in northern Minnesota. The iron samples came out positive. So the Merrit brothers started a mine. Then the brothers also started an iron ore deposit. The brothers got the nickname “ The Seven Iron Men”.
The industry was well for a long time. The mines were by
Lake Superior. The brothers made a railroad to Duluth. The railroads were finished in 1893. The trains would get the ore then drop the ore to boats. The mines today are now historical places were people can visit the mines and the outdoors. Thousands
