Mammy is one of the stereotype how white men look at to African American women. Mammy was pictured as fat, middle-aged, funny. Mammy 's most successful commercial expression is Aunt Jemima. ‘In 1889, Charles Rutt, a Missouri newspaper editor, and Charles G. Underwood, a mill owner, developed the idea of a self-rising flour that only needed water. He called it Aunt Jemima 's recipe. Rutt borrowed the Aunt Jemima name from a popular vaudeville song that he had heard performed by a team of minstrel performers’.3

There are a variety of ways and factors that influence how people are represented in different non-fiction and fiction texts. Indigenous Australians are usually represented in harmful disrespectful ways, but they are also represented in positive ways. There are many factors that contribute to these representations. In the TV show Freaks and Geeks, many stereotypes are presented through the use of media elements. The filmmakers used the media elements of setting and characters to show the different stereotypes in Freaks and Geeks. The media element setting is used to show stereotypes of the stereotypical high school environment using tools like time and place. Setting displays the stereotype that all high schools have certain groups assigned to their own tables. In the case of the TV show Freaks and Geeks, the geeks sit at one table and the jocks sit at another. During the 80’s most groups had a certain label that defined where they sat at lunch. Society is built upon a grand scale of assumptions and misunderstandings, all of which tend to lead us in a path for the worst. There is, however, a remedy for our seemingly infinite list of problems that lead us to war, hate, and unrest. Unfortunately, this remedy is not very likely to be found because we have not been looking in the right places, which happen to be right beneath our noses. You see, we as a society have spent our lives writing books, directing movies, and painting murals, and yet we have overlooked our own genius; Footloose, The Breakfast Club, and Dirty Dancing. These three movies all share a common thread, and it’s not their epic soundtracks and classic ending scenes. These three movies have the capability to perfect society.

It takes the average person under a minute to compose an opinion about someone they recently encountered. This opinion will be the image inside your head until you genuinely get to understand that person., but judgement with still occur because humans do this for an eccentric reason. People have stereotypes that go along with judging through age class, for example, adults stereotype judging teenagers as persistently staring at their phones all day, rarely interacting with anyone face to face. This exhibits irony; children and teenagers perceive their parents to be infallible.

The series ‘Fresh off the boat’ is a sitcom that used characters that display stereotypical or counter stereotypical behaviours of Asians that most people hold to be true. The sitcom teaches the viewers about the stereotypes that Asian and white people tend to be labelled by. The main character is Eddie, with his family and friends playing supporting roles. The family moved from Washington DC to Orlando. Eddie has made the decision to break out of the stereotypes to fit into with his peers at school. Through this experience, the audience got opportunities to see the positive and the negatives that stereotyping can give. On September 20, 1984, the Cosby Show made airways and forever changed the general population views on gender roles and race on television. Shows in the 1980s and 1970s were still perpetuated outdated gender stereotypes and televise them, for the American audience to perceive as “normal”. The Cosby Show went against the typical gender and racial stereotypes of African Americans on television. The show reshapes the four basic elements of gender stereotypes such as personality traits, domestic behaviors, occupations, and physical appearance” (“Gender Roles and Stereotypes”). The episode “Back to school”, The school season has begun and each of the children is having a different perspective on the school they attended. Cliff and Clair, nevertheless, are excited they are getting control over their house during the daytime. In the episode of “Back to School,” The Cosby show campaigned against the common gender stereotype being televised on television, and challenge the racial stereotypes being orchestrated by African American families in the media. The show redesigned the depiction of male and female roles in a televised household.

Stereotyping is an issue that affects all ages, genders, and races. Not all stereotypes are bad, but when you maliciously stereotype it becomes a problem. In S.E. Hinton’s young adult novel The Outsiders, stereotyping is a significant issue. There are two gangs in this novel, the “greasers”, and the “Socs”. The greasers live on the east side and are known as “hoods”. The Socs live on the west side and are known as the west side rich kids who have all the breaks. People judge their personality just based on where they live, and what they look like. Stereotyping is an unfair way to judge people because you never know their whole story.

The show won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in each of its first five years and the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series four times.

In the sitcom, Friends, we see a variety of stereotypes. Sitcoms usually aim for using strong stereotypes because they can easily create humor from them. There are three women: Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe. Each of them are characterized as just a few of the stereotypes commonly associated with women.

Modern Family is a popular primetime television show that airs Wednesday nights on ABC. This hit comedy presents the daily lifestyles of three separate but related families who reside in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California. The Dunphys are shown as the traditional white American family while the Pritchett-Tucker family are a homosexual couple with an adopted daughter named Lily. The Pritchetts are the last family who are an interracial couple with a large age gap. On the surface, this show seems to be one of the most diverse on television. However even with the different races and family structures portrayed, there is still evidence of unequal representation in casting, stereotypes, and gender roles.

The label of white trash even existing is seen to be appalling because of the former notion of white citizens being the alphas and that angered other White Americans(Eastman & Schrock pg 207). Stereotypes were and are a problem but Southern Rock & Roll musicians embraced theirs and appropriated with it because of capitalism. While no one deserves to be put into a category based on prejudice, White Americans made their stereotypes a positive while minorities struggled and still continue to struggle everyday due to stigmas placed on them.

The act of stereotyping is assuming that all members of a group have similar knowledge, behaviors, or beliefs simply because they belong to a group. Using stereotypes is one of the most common reasons why countless people are misjudged. It can occur with the person’s knowledge or it can happen subconsciously. Sometimes, in writing, authors will form stereotypes for their characters to fit into. By using a stereotype, it sets a base for the character to build off of and show change. The writers of tv’s number one hit comedy, The Big Bang Theory have included a prominent stereotype in their show that is fitting for their title. The stereotypical nerd is portrayed in many of the character’s through the way they dress, their vernacular, and their lack of social skills.

There are many controversial topics that we see on a daily basis through the media. Some of the topics that we are exposed to are race, stereotypes, sexism and sex. These things seem to be a key factor in how media makes its presence felt. Whether it is through T.V. shows, how stereotypes and race are still a common trend in present day movies. I believe that stereotyping is everywhere you look movies and T.V. in particular but also music. This leads to society seeing things in a black and white form, by this I mean people see things one way and that is not how it should be seen.

According to Lippmann, “stereotypes are ‘pictures in our heads’ that we use to apprehend the world around us” (16). Stereotypes can be formed due to effects of media, as Wood describes media as pervasive, powerful and influential (31). Hence, stereotypes can be defined as inaccurate perceptions towards a group of people or community that is strongly influenced by the media. Whether positive or negative, stereotypes are usually false as they are formed based on personal judgments, which are biased or exaggerated.
