Jefferson Remo ASUH General Scholarship Essay
An education, no matter at what level, is a privilege. I am a healthy and able person because of this privilege. I privileged to go to a high school that offered Advance Placement and International Baccalaureate courses. I was given the privilege to attend a four-year university right after high school. A privilege that has allowed me to bypass the obstacles and challenges that people without an education must face. We still see in some countries that girls do not have access to an education because of gender roles. We can see how some high schools in Hawai’i produce higher test scores and college acceptances because of the affluence of the community. These are just a few factors to show how an education impacts people’s lives. With this scholarship it will allow me to strive towards the Doctorate in Public Health. To continue my education in addressing the disparity in education and other disparities

Through this program I hope to learn the fundamentals of community based research, how to advocate for health policy, a most importantly how to educate communities on health. I believe that is the most rewarding thing I can get out of this program. Having the ability, the power, to change someone’s life, by just giving him or her basic health care knowledge is so empowering. Knowing that I changed that life, that because of me hopefully their health will better instead of worsen. Through this program I hope to learn from the community, to learn their experiences, which will allow me to be even more conscious of the disparities they are forced to face, hence causing me to ponder “how can this issue be fixed?”, “what policy can be implemented”?.

Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public health.
