Within Mary Shelley’s gothic novel, the viewer can identify how although society calls him a monster they still distinguish him from a human standpoint. Which can be witnessed through Shelley ’s language; her word choice illustrates that even though the characters label him a monster, they still hold him accountable the same way they would a human. A critical piece of language that classifies him as human is when Victor refers to him as a murderer, “I repaired to a criminal judge in the town, and told him I had an accusation to make; that I knew the destroyer of my family; and that I required him to exert his whole authority for the apprehension of the murderer” (Shelley, 202). The choice Victor made to call him a murder rather than a predator shows that the creature is more closely related to humans rather than animals. Furthermore, the creature is referred to as a murderer, meaning that he has developed the mental capacity to commit a crime.
In this way, the reader starts to feel anger towards the creature for causing their deaths, but as the point of view is switched, the creature’s feelings and reasoning for the events he caused becomes clear. If the narrator had been the creature, the reader would sympathize with him for creating him to be alone vs feeling bad for Frankenstein’s loss. The different point of views offer more evidence to support the author’s message about companionship. Shelley writes from Frankenstein’s point of view, “I have but one resource; and I devote myself, either in my life or death, to his destruction” (Shelley, 1818, p 188). In this quote, we can see how the lack of his wife, friend, and brother has driven him insane with anger and revenge for the creature.
Frankenstein Psychoanalysis In “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley, we can understand Victor Frankenstein and the Monster’s behavior by using psychoanalysis. Victor and the Monster go through major conflicts throughout the novel because of their inquisitive and unyielding nature. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is an excellent example of psychoanalysis because of the characters, Victor Frankenstein and the Monster. Using psychoanalysis helps us understand and get into to the minds of the characters. An example of psychoanalysis is when we see both of the characters conflicts and the fears that the Monster goes through when he realizes that he is different and has the capability to feel.
Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's rationalizations to show how his ego seeks to protect itself. Shelley focuses on how Frankenstein's ego gives Frankenstein a warped sense of reality. This warped sense of reality is first seen when Frankenstein decides to go from having little scientific experience to creating life from nothing. His ego forces him to labor with rot and the dead to achieve a mythical status as first and lone creator of life, further blinding him to the horror of his creation. As the novel progresses, Shelley uses ego to once again rationalize Frankenstein's actions.
Shelley has built the novel around this relationship in a way that captures not only the audience’s attention but also the character’s feelings of regret and hatred as the consequences of exceeding these moral boundaries come to haunt them in the decisions they make and influence the people around them. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein uses the conflict between Victor and the creature, specifically their predatory relationship in their pursuit of revenge, to emphasize how revenge will consistently push or even exceed moral boundaries. The conflict between Victor and his creature is outlined in Frankenstein through the monster’s attempt to hurt Victor through the killing of William and Victor’s destruction of the creature’s future mate, representing how revenge often cultivates a normalization of immorality. One morally ambiguous character in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein would be the monster Victor Frankenstein created. He is morally ambiguous because of his desire to know more, his constant battles against society and himself as well as his feelings, and his tragic hero personality or his desire to get revenge. These are all the things that reveal the pivotal role the monster plays in this story. It is very hard to decide whether or not the monster is benevolent. One of the key turning point ideas that are exposed to the reader was his desire to know more.
The novel “Frankenstein,” by Mary Shelley tells the story of a man named Victor Frankenstein, who decides to go against the laws of nature by bringing to life a being constructed with decaying body parts. Victor believes in natural philosophy and science, which leads him to the idea of creating this Creature. Although this novel can be interpreted in many ways, I believe that Mary Shelley is shining a light on the harmful and dangerous impacts that prejudice and assumptions can have on people who are considered different. Shelley may be suggesting that humanity is the true 'monster ' due to its socialized ideologies that make ambition, self-greed and rage fulfilling. Even to this day society is known to shun those who we do not see as equals.

Several themes such as good versus evil, prejudice, and ambition & fallibility, the importance of friendship along with references to other famous texts like the Christian bible are manifested through the use of Victor and the Creature as they interact with each other allowing readers to construe examples of morality. Many debaters may argue the Creature is “evil” since a majority of his actions harm others while Victor is good because he was the victim and seeks to destroy his creation. However, one may counter this argument if they accentuate Victor is evil since he was the Creature’s creator,
Are we responsible for the actions of our offspring? Marie Shelley's masterpiece “Frankenstein” poses the question to its readers, although the lines are blurred and grey. It would appear at first that Frankenstein's monster is to blame for the deaths; A closer look reveals otherwise, that Victor is responsible and that he is the real monster of the story. Looking only at actions, the monster did all the actual killing of the book, but his actions were in response to Victor’s mistreatment. It was his hands that choked William, Clerval and Justine.

Within these traits, Mary Shelley explicitly uses the Creature as her primary focus. She uses the Creature because she wants readers to understand how humanity rejects people due to their appearances instead of their inner self. Due to the monster 's appearances, humanity rejects him.
No longer were monsters a product of supernatural forces, monsters were created. Yet, in order for a person to become a monster, a person cannot exist in isolation. Relating my idea of the connection between knowledge and morality in the Scientific Revolution/Enlightenment period to the monster and his body in Frankenstein, I argue that society’s knowledge of the monster is formed in one of two ways; one, through scientific creation or two, through social construction. Now, it is through (1) physical features which differ drastically from others or (2) immoral actions that one becomes a monster in their own society. In part, “monsters” are products of their own environment.
