While Lincoln faced opposition to some of his beliefs a majority of his actions influenced the United States in the long term. I also agree that the Emancipation Proclamation was the greatest measure of his presidency. The Emancipation Proclamation was a decree that freed slaves in areas of rebellion if they were to fight in the war, which did not please everyone (Faragher,396). Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. He was raised in a one-room log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky, but later he moved to southern Indiana in 1816. Lincoln didn’t go to school often because he had to support his family. He moved to Southern Illinois in 1830 with his family, and Lincoln worked on a river flatboat hauling freight sown the Mississippi to New Orleans when living in Southern Illinois. After moving to Salem, Illinois he got jobs as a shopkeeper and a postmaster.
His friends convinced him to run for Illinois state legislator, but he did not win, so his store failed. At about the same time, a war broke out between the Native Americans and the Illinois settlers. Again, Abe tried to run for State Legislator, and counted on all his friends for support.
