This led to the Battle of Bull Run, where the Union was defeated. Lincoln then sent 500,000 troops to fight the Confederates. Although Lincoln had little to no experience in battle, he was still a great leader because he was very smart and used strategy to achieve victory. He showed his strong leadership skills while dealing with one of his Generals, George McClellan. McClellan was removed from his position by Lincoln because the General repeatedly refused to attack the Confederate troops. This happened several times, and the straw that broke the camel’s back was when General McClellan refused to attack the Confederates who were retreating after losing the Battle of Antietam. Lincoln also displayed skillful use of strategy by suspending the right of habeas corpus, because he felt it would help the Union win the …show more content…

The battle at Vicksburg, along with the battle of Gettysburg were necessary for the Union to win the War. The Gettysburg Address, which was a short speech delivered by Lincoln during a dedication ceremony for a new cemetery at Gettysburg. The Gettysburg Address is one of the most widely quoted speeches in history, explaining why the pursuit of human equality was so important to the Founding Fathers and in the Declaration of Independence. “The American Civil War was the greatest war in American history. 3 million fought - 600,000 paid the ultimate price for freedom. And a war for freedom, it was. The desire for freedom traveled deeper than the color of skin and farther than the borders of any state.” The general of the civil war is Ulysses S. Grant, he was a general in the north and here from a site I have more information “It was Grant's understated brilliance that won The Civil War.
Abraham Lincoln, the president at the time was a very enthusiastic and smart political man, he was able to gain all the northern state's loyalty and trust which offered support. Also, Current mentions general Ulysses S. Grant. Grant was the commanding general at the time, Current talks about how Grant was a genius and determined general that allowed him to gain victories over the confederate armies. Grant won important battles such as Vicksburg, Chattanooga, the battle of Shiloh, and the overland campaigns. Current later talks about the Emancipation Proclamation.
Furthermore Grant is well known for his comeback at the battle of Shiloh. As Grant was pushing on towards Shiloh a village in Tennessee. He was caught by surprise by Confederate troops and the Union force fled back towards the river. The next day, determined and stubborn, Grant, along with the help of Union reinforcements defeated the Confederates. It was an epic win for the Union.
This battle was one of the most significant because it had the highest amount of casualties of the battles during the War, and it brought about Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address speech. This speech honored the soldiers killed during the battle and reminded the people of the purpose of the soldier’s sacrifices, which were to be equal, free, and to have national unity. Robert E. Lee led his army of Northern Virginia to collect supplies in Pennsylvania farmland and take the fight away from Virginia. He wanted to threaten Northern cities, weaken their appetite for war to be able to win the battle on Northern Soil to strengthen the peace movement of the North.2 There were great losses to both sides of the army’s, but the Confederate army was most defeated. Lee led his army back to Virginia with their victory despite their mass
Abraham Lincoln, our sixteenth president, was born on February 12, 1809 in Sinking Spring Farm, Kentucky. Although his second term was cut short by his assassination, he managed to change the face of America and its future path in those short 1,503 days. During his first term alone, he opened up settlement in the western United States with the Homestead Act, he freed slaves to fight for the Union’s cause in the Civil War with the Emancipation Proclamation, and he gave the Gettysburg Address following the battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. These are just a few of the many contributions Lincoln made during his presidency, forever changing our direction as a nation and making him one of the greatest presidents in our history. President
Grant led the North to multiple victories during the Civil War and served as the 18th president of the United States. After great success in the Mexican-American War, Grant halted his time in the army, until the Civil War. His victories at Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Fort Donelson, and Fort Henry all showed Abraham Lincoln that Grant was capable of leading the Union. After General Lees’ army was left starving, and exhausted during the battle of Appomattox in Virginia, Lee surrendered to General Grant. This was important during the War because Grant was first Union general who had beaten Confederate leader Robert E. Lee.
Grant, as he commanded the Union’s army to its victory during the war. His prime “opponent” during the war was Robert E. Lee, the most iconic and possibly the most respected Southern war commander. It’s ironic in that Lee had much more military experience than Grant did, but it’s clear from the actions the two took that Grant was a superior commander. While Lee did defeat armies in Virginia, he failed to successfully invade Northern soil twice. Grant refused to withdraw in battles, regardless of the setbacks and casualties, and because his troops outnumbers Lee’s, they were gradually reduced in number.
Not only had Abraham Lincoln delivered the Emancipation Proclamation, but he is also the creator of the Gettysburg Address. “The sorrows of war and its rigorous necessity afflicted him; he expressed both in one of the noblest public speeches ever made, the Gettysburg Address, made at the dedication of the soldier’s cemetery at Gettysburg in 1863.” (Columbia University). Not only had he announced the freedom of slaves, Abraham Lincoln had the ability to make one of the most famous speeches of all time. There were social, economic, and cultural influences on Abraham Lincoln which affected his lifetime achievements.
Generals Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan were the major commanders in the spotlight of the combat. These two men were completely different and the battle effected them in a weird way. While McClellan officially won the the battle and Lee lost it, his lack actions before, during and after the battle caused him his job and a Chief Commander, as opposed to Lee who´d always been respected gained even more respect by his campaign in Maryland and battle tactics at Sharpsburg. Despite removing McClellan from his position, President Lincoln achieved something that altered the course of American History once and for all, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The bloody battle of Antietam, was one of the most significant and most peculiar battles fought in the history of the USA; not only were the battle plans revealed before the battle even started, but the question is whether the Union took a full advantage of the leaked out document, evidence of which is not really straightforward in the course of the battle itself.
Grant’s counterattacks had payed off, it devastated the confederate troops. Many of Grants piers did not like the way he led, but there were also people who admired Grants style, one of his admirers was President Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln liked the way he fought fearlessly, Lincoln even said “I can’t spare this man, he fights.” Lincoln’s admiration for Grant would lead to him putting Grant in charge of the entire Union
