Atzerodt was assigned to assassinate Vice President Johnson but he lost his nerve and fled. Meanwhile at 7:22pm , at Ford’s Theater, Booth went into Lincoln’s private box unnoticed and with a single bullet, shot the president in the back of his head. Slashing an army officer who rushed at him, Booth jumped to the stage and shouted “Sic semper tyrannis!”, the South is avenged!” Booth broke his leg jumping out of the box, but he was still successful in escaping.
