As we age in life, we tend to need a lot more help from others. At older ages, there are somethings that may not be able to be completed on our own so caregivers are our hope. Nursing homes are made for the elderly and those with disabilities to be cared for. These facilities are meant to give families the opportunity to make sure their family is receiving proper care while they take care of their own personal business. However, the care is not always as good as it may seem. In many nursing homes there is abuse present. Rather that is physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, or even financial abuse, it is wrong and inhumane. Abuse is often shown by caregivers but can also be shown by other residents in the facility. Having mental …show more content…
The reasoning behind all the abuse has to do with how the business is ran. Even though this is unfair to the residents, many people feel as if they shouldn’t put their all because they aren’t appreciated. According to Nursing Home Abuse Justice, “A nursing home lacking resources and professional management and supervisions is difficult to operate. When the management is not up to par how it should be, that affects the care the staff distributes. Some other examples that affect the care given to the residents are staffing shortages, lack of training and underpaid staff (Nursing Home Abuse Justice). When nursing homes are understaffed, it leaves more work on the staff. The job for 2 people now becomes the job for 1 person. Because there aren’t enough hands to take on every resident, some work doesn’t get done and eventually it becomes abuse. In this case, it is out of the caregiver’s hands and that is now a management issue. When there is staff that are not properly trained, it makes it harder for the residents to get the care they need. If you are not familiar with care giving and you were not trained for it, it may be too much for someone to take on. Especially for dementia patients and aggressive individuals, it can cause the caregiver to misinterpret what is going on and react in a negative …show more content…
Many of them may not be able to recover from different types of abuse. For older people, the consequences of abuse can be especially serious, and recovery may take longer (WHO). If these residents are physically abused, it can lead to them being hospitalized from their injuries. Most of them are fragile and weak due to their physical health so they are easily bruised and hurt. The elderly can end up being depressed and having a cognitive decline because what is happening to them. It isn’t easy for them to just accept abuse especially for those who know what is going on. Those who have cognitive problems don’t understand what is happening to them and that can make it worse. Nobody wants to be used and abused by someone who is supposed to be caring for them. It can lead to them refusing any care because of what they went through in the
All individuals have the entitlement to living their lives exempt from aggression or any type of abuse. Circumstances of abuse at senior individuals frequently appear publicly although several occurrences of abuse could likewise go unannounced. Safeguarding older people is ever more recognized as a serious matter for society, with ongoing exposure of abusive and unjust systems and practices that defy social care practices and those who labor with adult deemed as at risk (previously referred to as vulnerable) (Scragg & Mantell, 2011). The above change resulted, as the terminology 'vulnerable adult ' was perceived as negatively meaning that the abused adult is partially responsible of the abuse occurring to him/her (Mandelstam, 2011).
Many people are supported in their homes by people who work along side the health and social care service such as social workers, nursers ,doctor and care givers or they may get support from their family members and friends. An elderly person may choose to stay in their own homes instead of a residential care home while seeking help and support from others, however this can lead to potential opportunities for abuse happening to the person who Is being looked after. When an individual is getting support at home by a carer, the individual being cared for is vulnerable and defenseless and therefor this makes them a target for abuse, another example is abuse by strangers, when an elderly person lives alone they are at risk of people calling at the door and then gaining access to their homes, they may steal items from them or mistreat them or cause intimidation. A person who is vulnerable and living alone are at risk of physical and sexual because there is no one there to stop this abuse from happening.
“It’s a very difficult position to be in.” "Elder abuse is a terrible but preventable problem," ODJFS Director Cynthia C. Dungey said in a news release. "It affects all socioeconomic classes, races and genders. The more we spread the word about how to recognize and report it, the easier it will be to stop it from occurring and to make sure our older friends and family members get the help they need and the care they deserve." ODJFS supervises the state 's Adult Protective Services program, which helps vulnerable adults age 60 and older who are in danger of harm, are unable to protect themselves and may have no one to assist
abuse: When the service user lives with the carer, it may increase the chances for abuse to occur as this situation may cause stress and resentment if the carer feels he/she cannot cope. Not properly trained staff who do not receive any supervision or support at work, as well as stressed staff who are going through personal problems, or who do not like working in the care sector, may increase the risk of an individual being abused. In addition, patients who are not mobile, are confused, suffer from dementia or are aggressive or challenging, may also present an increase for the risk of an individual being abused, since the carer
Physical abuse is exactly what anyone could imagine, it involves the physical act of beating, choking, or even sexually assaulting an elderly individual. This might occur in a situation where a caregiver becomes frustrated with an elderly individual for not performing a task the caregiver desires, or could simply be a case where someone takes advantage of an elderly person who may not be capable of retaliating. Psychological abuse is when threats, intimidation, and verbal aggression are used on an elderly person. Psychological abuse can be seen when a decision needs to be made by an elderly individual. One may threaten or intimidate an elder to persuade them to make a desired decision, and the elder would listen in fear or trust that the decision is of the best interest.
These horrible cases should indicate that elderly abuse is a devastating burden on the healthcare system, which should be focused at providing high quality care to each member of society, though especially to vulnerable populations like the
Living in a long-term care facility can be devastating. Residents may feel abandoned by family, sadness because their friends have passed, or a feeling of being stuck. Though there are regulations in place to keep a stand for quality of life, I think as administrator I would go above and beyond those regulations. In my opinion they need to be stricter, but since they are not, I would do my best to give our elders what they have earned and deserve. It is important to consider how a person would want the conditions of a facility that their grandmother, grandfather, mother, or father would be in when they could no long live at home.
Identifying people at risk of abuse and neglect It is important when working in a health and social care environment that service providers are able to recognise or identify people who are at risk of suffering from abuse or neglect. Some abusers are aware the care worker’s role. This role is to make sure that they are able to report concerns and will make user that they don’t abuse or neglect a service user in front of others. In addition to this, it is important that a service provider is able to spot of there has been any changes in behaviour in a certain service user who they are giving help to.
These facilities can be improved to reach higher expectations and tremendous rewards, but in order to do so, these events taking place in nursing homes and assisted living centers need to stop immediately. One way these facilities can improve is to require further education for the employees to complete so there will be an increased amount of suitable crowds hired to work. These facilities are already unbearably expensive so it would be an easy fix to use part of that money to raise the employee’s pay. Once there is a better group of employees with higher education and better pay, then there should be improvement in the care the residents receive. Superb quality nursing homes start with a superb quality administrator.
However, the care worker may abuse this power and if a service user had unacceptable behaviour they may be punished rather than being told what their doing wrong, because most care workers complain about their salary, they choose not to do specific things as they complain about “not being paid enough for this” this can lead duty of care being appaling as they may leave individuals who may need support in changing leave them be in an uncomfortable situation for a long duration of time. Respect and Dignity can also be harshly discriminated as care homes may serve bacon to service users who are muslim which is forbidden, this can happen with individuals who have dementia as they may not remember their beliefs. In an old care home, most individuals are capable of doing activities individually, however if they are always helped , they can feel less in control and lack in free choice. When safeguarding is not properly practised people will feel unprotected making them lack sleep as they become frightened at night. When service users are not being treated properly they can become unhappy with the setting and eventually depressed lacking in self image and self
• Caregivers may be hearing information that is very contrary to their own personal standards. • Caregivers may be unclear of their responsibility to report or what constitutes abuse or neglect. • Caregivers may be fearful that they will be brought into a legal matter where their reputation and character may be questioned. • Caregivers may not want to become involved. • Caregivers may be fearful of retaliation from the caregiver/alleged abuser or their agency.
Hillier and Barrow (2015), associate problems of caregiving with the responsibility itself, the caregivers personal health, role strains, strained family relationships, ect. With all of this strain on an informal caregiver it seems most beneficial to the caregiver and the elderly individual to consider admittance in to an assisted living facility. Once a basis has been established as to why an elderly person is admitted in to an assisted living facility, further insight shall be established to denote what is considered elder abuse. In this movie, Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities, several
