Academic Achievement refers to the performance of a student in an academic year. It determines the success or failure of an individual in field of education. It can also refer to the performance of a student in a particular subject(5). According to Steinberg and Merriam(1993), "Achievement encompasses student ability and performance; it is multidimensional ; it is intricately related to human growth and cognitive, emotional, social and physical development; it reflects the whole child; it is not related to a single instance but occurs across time and levels, through a student 's life in public school and on into post secondary years and working life." Wester refers academic achievement as "the quality and quantity of a student 's work." Educational bodies usually look at the overall academic achievement of the students enrolled in their education system to study the efficiency of their system and to decide if any changes need to be made in the system for obtaining better results(6). Finally, at the college level, the cumulative effect of the academic achievement gap between boys and girls becomes very evident already when one is solely looking at the higher proportion of females who graduate from college. In the introduction, it was already explained how more and more women began to attain college education, because of their changing ‘role’, the acceptance and legality of using the pill as birth control, the shift towards later marriage, and the increasing consensus among women of the importance of college education for better paid jobs. This in combination with the emergence of feminist groups that pressured the government and companies on creating more equality, resulted in an environment in which women could catch up.
Emotional intelligence strand which is based on Goleman’s (2001) conceptual framework where feelings and emotions are considered an integral part of reflective process. Learners are first introduced to four competencies in emotional intelligence in that order: awareness of own emotions, management of own emotions, awareness of others’ emotions and management of others’ emotions (Jordan & Lawrence 2009). A task is then given to the learners in first year where they reflect on their perceptions about their own emotional intelligence and how to address their strength and weaknesses. Learners later in the year assess themselves that whether or not they have improved on the emotional intelligence or not. Author has suggested that this task can be converted into goal oriented task and students can be encouraged to build on their emotional intelligence according to their current level.

Leadership influences the behaviors, attitudes and thoughts of others. Effective leaders help others navigate obstacles and challenges. They can also encourage and inspire those around them.
However, that is not to say that academics are an afterthought. The teaching of academics is where students can find their passions. In the search for a student’s areas of interest, I believe they are much more likely to pursue a topic if they have a positive belief in themselves. The mental and academic performance of a student go hand-in-hand, which is why, in my opinion, standardized tests are not the answer.

Having empathy for others during my teenager years, and always being the one people chose to talk to made me think I scored high in that attribute. However, after experiencing the leadership & employability group project, it seemed I had mislead myself confusing having empathy with what emotional intelligence really is. Blumenfeld et al.
