LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 INTRODUCTION

Numerous past studies have been suggested to explain the influences of academic performance. Although the literature presents a wide variety of academic performance factors, this review will particularly focus on psychological problems (stress, anxiety and depression), social support (friends, family and special person) and gender. It is also included previous analysis done by other researchers as well as the method performed.

2.2 SOCIAL SUPPORT

Social support is the experience being valued, loved, cared about and respected by others who are presents in person’s life (Gurung, 2006). Social support may come from different sources for example friends, family, lecturer, community or any social …show more content…

A study conducted by Talib, N., & Sansgiry, S. S. (2012) on a sample of 199 undergraduate and graduate students from Rawalpindi and Islamabad University, Pakistan. They studied on the effect of factors such as test competence, academic competence, strategic studying, time management, and test anxiety on the academic performance of university students in Pakistan. They found that anxiety and time management were significantly related with the students’ academic performance. In addition, according to Prima Vitasari, Muhammad Nubli Abdul Wahab, Ahmad Othman, Tutut Herawan, Suriya Kumar Sinnadurai (2010) found that there was a significant correlation of high level anxiety and low academic performance among engineering students at Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). In another study in examining the correlations between anxiety and depression level on academic achievement towards medical students who were experiencing curriculum reform by Yeh, Y., Yen, C., Lai, C., Huang, C., Huang, I., & Liu, K. (2007) found that there were positive and negative relationships between academic performance and anxiety and depression in medical students …show more content…

A research by W.Y Abdel Wahed & S. K Hassan (2016) found that female students experienced higher stress and anxiety rather than male students among 442 medical Fayoum University students as well as a study done by Lama M Al-Qaisy (2011) found that females are more anxious than male but males are more depressed than females among 200 students in Tafila Technical University. However, there are findings contradict a number of previous studies that did not exhibit any gender-derived differences in any psychological disorders. According to Al-Shayea (2014) gender does not show any significant relationship in any psychological disturbances among 84 Saudi postgraduate orthodontic students.
