Bartolomeu Dias and His Accomplishments When people think of maritime explorers, they usually think of Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, and Leif Eriksson. All of these are important historical figures in their own right, but one shouldn 't forget to include Bartolomeu Dias in the list. This comes from the fact that the Portuguese explorer had several impressive achievements that should not be ignored and that he had important contributions to the world of maritime exploration. Before we tackle his accomplishments, though, let 's take a closer look at who Bartolomeu Dias really was. Nothing is known much about his life before his voyage, except that he was a part of the court of Portuguese king João II and that he managed the royal warehouses. Historians think that Dias was in his thirties when he was assigned to the famous expedition, and they assume that he had prior experience with seafaring, although nothing is …show more content…
This is a big accomplishment, though, because doing this allowed the Portuguese to prove that there indeed was a faster and easier way to travel to India and obtain spices and other goods. Joao II dispatched Bartolomeu Dias with the goal of finding an ocean route to India and locating the Kingdom of Prester John. Dias was given three ships, namely the Sao Cristovao (which was commanded by Dias himself), the Sao Pantaleao (which was commanded by Joao Infante), and a support ship that was commanded by Dias 's brother Pero. Dias had brought along six African people who were previously brought to Portugal by other explorers, and he dropped them off one by one as they passed different ports along the African coastline. The Africans were each given gold and silver, which they were to give to the indigenous people to express the Portuguese 's
The 15th century was the start of many voyages and the popular use of ships for trade, traveling, and exploration. Columbus, de Gama, and Zheng He, were all leaders Zheng He was the first major ocean voyager in the 15th century. He led seven expeditions, through the Indian ocean using over 300 massive boats called “treasure ships”. Though, unlike many others in his time, he was not an explorer.
From 1500- circa 1600 the Indian Ocean was a flourishing trade center that had various central locations run by some of the most powerful countries at the time. This led to a bulk of issues and a number of benefits. The Portuguese were a very powerful leader of the region and were known for their harsh culture and, almost pirate like in some ways of their customs. Their power and influence made a considerable difference in the culture and regional power throughout trade in the Indian Ocean. The Portuguese transformed maritime trade in the Indian Ocean to a large extent because of the threatening power changes, corrupt trading, and the way the trade goods’ quality transformed over time.
In the 16th century, the Portuguese was able to find a route around the Cape of Good Hope that got them involved in the Indian Ocean trade. The trade was dominated by Asian traders who operate from East Africa to India and from Eastern India to Indonesia. The Portuguese replaced these Asian traders to Venetian, Genoese and Catalan traders. Soon in 1507-1515, Portugal conquered carefully calculated cities like Goa, Malacca and Hormuz and set up a base in these cities. The impact the Portuguese bring to the Indian Ocean trade is when they enter the trade for the benefit of wealth and power over Spain and the Muslims, they took control over trading cities with spices through the use of violent force and strategic methods which cause the Portuguese
Before the Portuguese got into the Indian ocean to begin maritime trade there was mainly land-based trading going on with the nations/countries around them and some maritime trade. As the countries began to trade more and more they all soon had the products that each country around them had to offer. That’s when the Portuguese decided to try and transform maritime trade. The Portuguese wanted the three g’s every country dreams of: God, Glory, and Gold. Although many Scholars would argue that the Portuguese transformed maritime trade, they did not due to how power hungry they got and waging war with the nations and the effects left on the countries.
There are two major people that played a huge part in this exploration, John White and Sir Walter Raleigh. John White and Walter Raleigh are both from British descent and both worked for the queen. John White had a

Chapters 20/21 Even though Christopher Columbus held onto his belief that he had reached the Indies until the day he died, the new continent he had actually reached had been the result of much geographical speculation and exploration by many curious men. “In some ways, these journeys of discovery collectively represent man’s most astounding characteristic: intellectual curiosity (Watson 424).” As Watson points out, we who live in the twenty-first century have nothing to compare to the feats accomplished by those early map makers and courageous adventurers. “The discovery of America was important intellectually for Europeans” yet many drawbacks soon followed as the New World was not as developed as the Old World (Watson 442).The lack of technology,
Christopher Columbus as we know is the historical person credited for the discovery of the New World. Zheng He was a Hui-Chinese mariner, explorer, diplomat and fleet admiral, who commanded voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa. Each men and their fleets had two completely different reason for their travel. Christopher Columbus purpose was to find a new trade way to the Asian countries. Zheng He's purpose was to enlarge empires control of seaway trade.
The document by King Affonso I, titled Letters to King Jao of Portugal was written in 1526. During King Affonso’s reign, he saw many benefits of creating strong trading relationships with Europeans, specifically Portugal. To create a powerful alliance between the Kongo and Portugal the royal family converted to Christianity and allowed the process of importing European products. However, the importation of European goods appeared to diminish the economic society of the Kongo. In the letters to Portugal from King Affonso, he explains how the merchants who came to his kingdom are permitted to sell goods that are prohibited in the Kingdom of the Kongo.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, leaders of a few European nations sent expeditions out in the hope that explorers would find great wealth and vast undiscovered lands. The Portuguese were the earliest participants in this “Age of Discovery.” Starting in about 1420, Portuguese ships sailed the African coast, carrying spices, gold, slaves and other goods from Africa and Asia to Europe.

Eventually Columbus got all of the ships and money that he needed for his first voyage from Spain’s Queen Isabella. Later on, he had reached the opportunity to achieve his main goal that was caused by selfishness, he wanted to become rich. Queen Isabella was also just as selfish as Columbus was. The only reason that
Though the Abbisads would eventually lose control of the Indian Ocean Trade Route in 1258 C.E. when they collapsed as an empire, they were able to set a clear standard of Islamic rule of the trade route for hundreds of years. Overtime, the trade route would expand and include parts of Europe, Africa, and East Asia and eventually develop into an independent system of peaceful trade. This became a standard in the area until the Portuguese began to use force and take over the Indian Ocean Trade Route for their economic benefit. All in all, the Portuguese drastically transformed maritime trade in the Indian Ocean in the sixteenth century through their attempts of monopolizing and forcibly taking control of the entire trade route to help gain economic revenue and trade more items.
The Portuguese exploration along the West African coast led to the creation of the
Christopher Columbus is a man who is commonly depicted as a hero and great explorer who discovered our modern day America, but many of the so called “facts” are not all completely true as people would like to believe. Columbus was undoubtedly a courageous explorer who brought many new ideas, cultures, and resources to be exchanged between the New World and Europe. While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America. Columbus started from humble middle class family. Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa as the oldest of his four siblings.
