In 1966 Regan won his first election becoming the Governor of California and he served for two terms. During his reign as governor, he temporarily stopped government hiring to slow the growth of the state workforce, but he also approved tax increases to balance the state budget. He also worked with the Democratic majority in the state legislature to enact a major reform of the welfare system. The reform reduced the number of people receiving state aid while increasing the benefits for those who remained eligible. During his tenure as governor, Reagan chaired the Republican Governors Association from 1968 to 1969. In 1980 his hard work paid off and he won the elections and became the oldest elected person to the US presidency. During his term as President, he survived an assignation attempt, implemented policies to reduce federal government’s involvement in our daily lives, and he appointed, the first woman Sandra Day O’Connor to the Supreme Court. He was essential in bringing down the Berlin wall and ending the Cold War peacefully.
