Today, the public image of healthcare through media impacts our society in a major way. Medical dramas touch many audiences by way of countless emotions. While watching the drama you may feel sadness, joy, empathy, and many more emotions in one episode. I am a victim of being emotionally invested into a medical drama and this drama is Grey’s Anatomy. I believe that there are accuracies as well as inaccuracies in the television show Greys Anatomy regarding healthcare. Audiences are impacted by these dramas because you can relate to the characters, you may have a medical condition, or you may go through the same situation that one the cast members go through personally.
Grey’s Anatomy is a medical drama television series that airs on ABC. This

The interns and residents make huge mistakes that normally would cause them to get kicked out of the program. For example, Izzy, an intern at the time, falls in love with a patient by the name of Danny. Danny’s condition worsens and Izzy cuts his wire in order for him to move up on the transplant list. Of course, she gets off lightly and we know that this is very unlikely. In real life, a resident would be kicked out of the program, sued, and unable to practice medicine again, and possibly serve jail time (Kirzner, 2014). Additionally, physicians are certainly not allowed to be romantically involved with their …show more content…
What I adore most about the show is that some of the healthcare information has been correct. It’s exciting to hear something medical related and know exactly what they are talking about. For example, last semester I took Human Anatomy. At the time, we were learning about hormones, specifically growth hormones. On a particular episode, the patient produced too much growth hormone which caused acromegaly. Knowing the reason behind the patient’s condition personally was a thrill for me. We had just discussed acromegaly and the causes, and in that moment I felt as though I was really learning
The essay, “Gouging the Poor” by Barbara Ehreneich ridicules the current health care system and speaks for the unfortunate without health insurance. She adopts a sarcastic tone to appeal to the audience about the unethical way the hospitals are treating the patients. Ehrenreich’s first-hand experience of no longer having health-insurance and her use of evidence make her argument about the health-care system compelling. Throughout her piece, Ehrenreich uses many sources that establish her credibility and appeal to ethos, as well as build her argument.
Candace Newmaker, a bright girl trying to find a home until she met her terrible fate of being murdered. One of the worst things you can inflict upon another human, is to steal their lives. People who take another’s life are sentenced harshly. But when it comes to doctors, they receive a free pass. Why should doctors and medical physicians not be as harshly punished compared to others?
With these patients come high emotional roller-coaster, wanting to know as much as possible. As a soon to be Sonographer we are taught not to relay any information we view. Not even at the slightest bit. Sonographers act under the direction of
They created their own code of medical ethics. (American Medical Association) The AMA has a committee for Medical Education. (Prezi Inc) Their motto is “Helping Doctors Help Patients.”
As the camera zoomed in onto a sad little girl after the loss of her sister, I realized that the documentary, Burzynski: Cancer is Serious Business would be a difficult film to watch. Movies that depict dying children are often full of drama and heartache and this was no different. I was appalled at the treatment of these poor innocent patients and their families, and the movie had just begun. As I continued to watch the movie; however, my opinion changed from outrage that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would be so corrupt and unjust, to realizing that maybe the movie was playing with my emotions. Although effective in using good rhetorical strategies, the viewer must separate emotion and drama from lack of evidence and
Physicians are under constant stress throughout school, residency, and trying to find a permanent job. As we saw in the film, many relationships don’t last under this strenuous pressure. Studies have found that healthcare professionals experience a significantly higher rate of divorce, compared to other professions. Since physicians are needed in the community every day throughout the year, this makes vacations very difficult. In other professions, workers are able to take time off to relax.
Rhetorical Analysis: House The following quote taken from FOX’s popular TV series House perfectly exemplifies the attitude of Dr. Gregory House, “…You wouldn’t believe the crap people let me get away with.” When considering American’s attitudes toward doctors, behavioral schemas, and the social cognitive theory; this popular medical/investigative drama series reinforces the idea to a large viewership that gifted individuals are above the consequences which would otherwise apply to everyone else. Dr. Gregory House is the main character in House which airs on Fox television networks and can be also viewed on Netflix.
It creates a bad environment because a doctor is supposed to be impartial and having a personal relationship means they can use their leverage as a doctor against the other person. Madolyn realizes that she can no longer see Billy as well as date Colin and decides to stop seeing
They think that having a discussion about this sensitive topic can help build trust between patients with their doctors, nurses, and others around them. For example, Doctor Schwartz, who spoke at the Society of General Internal Medicine annual meeting in Toronto said, “because conflicts over futility can create mistrust between family members and the healthcare system, the most important thing a doctor can do is work to build trust remembering that this is the process that doesn’t always happen immediately.” (Gesensway) Schwartz claims that even though there can be mistrust between doctors and their patients, one of the most important things is making sure that the patient is comfortable and that they are only suggesting these treatments to help them. However, doctor Schwartz’s method does not work with everybody. A random national sample of 1117 people asked citizens how they feel about aid-in-dying and if they think that having discussions about this topic can affect the trust of patients with their doctors.
In the case of Donald (Dax) Cowart, one can determine that the conflict is between Beneficence and Autonomy. The doctors were morally right in choosing to treat Donald despite his autonomy by using the principle of beneficence. Firstly, doctors entire training is about how to save lives, so in a sense it is something they are morally obligated to do. Patients go to hospital in the hopes of being treated.
The patient medical form, as a genre primarily used for information gathering and record keeping, is structured in such a way that it allows the reader the necessary information concerning the patient’s past medical history, as well as any other relevant or current information that would aid the physician in constructing diagnosis and treatment. This is another example of the rhetoric appeal for the genre. The audience of the genre, the patient when filling out the form, gets a sense of a __________ due the genre’s writing structure and rhetor. The rhetor utilizes basic vocabulary so that even an average person, even illiterate in the field of medicine is well aware about what is being asked.
Meredith Grey from “Grey’s Anatomy” is a positive role model for young adults due to her self-determination, courage, and perseverance. In the film Escape Fire the Fight to Rescue American Healthcare, there were many insightful examples of why our Unites States healthcare revolves around paying more and getting less. The system is designed to treat diseases rather than preventing them and promoting wellness. In our healthcare industry, there are many different contributors that provide and make up our system. These intermediaries include suppliers, manufacturers, consumers, patients, providers, policy and regulations. All these members have a key role in the functionality of the health care industry; however, each role has its positives and negatives.
Grey’s Anatomy has been a widely popular television series on ABC for many years and continues to get attention. Grey’s Anatomy is a television series that focuses on the lives of doctors, their relationships, and their experience in overcoming challenging surgical procedures. Many people tune in to watch the drama unfold, watch relationships grow, obstacles arise, and find a way to relate in one way or another. Throughout the twelve seasons, the audience has watched racially diverse characters come and go. Some might connect the show’s popularity to its racial diversity, while others might connect it to the entertaining medical drama.
It is very clear to most that Grey ’s Anatomy is an inaccurate depiction of medicine and the healthcare industry. Though heavily dramatized and ‘doctored’, there have been moments of learning, especially with this ethical issue.
