The Novel My Brother Sam Is Dead by the Collier Brothers is about a boy named Tim during the American Revolution. His brother Sam, a Patriot rebel who joined the militia, walked into the tavern in Redding, Connecticut. Their father, Eliphalet, is a Loyalist who doesn’t like Sam’s actions. They argue and Sam leaves the tavern to fight. It is like Sam and Father are at war against each other. The War is impacting their family because Eliphalet kicked Sam out of the house for being a Patriot. (Pg. 22)

Throughout this story, Adam starts to become more mature as time goes on, even in his father eyes. “Yesterday he was a boy, father replied, his voice dull and troubled. Tonight, he’s not” (Fast 73). This quote explains how Adams father starts to see a young man in him. Even today, the gallantry of a few soldiers that won independence for the country is not only kept in the hearts of the people but run in the American blood to demonstrate acts of valor at times of war and hardships. One such story recorded in the history dates back to 1776, about a sixteen-year old juvenile, Joseph Plumb Martin, joined the Rebel Infantry and recorded his tribulations about forty-seven years in a memoir titled as “A Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier”.

Throughout the novel, 1776 by David McCullough, there are several events that occurred within history during this time frame. Starting off with the American Revolution, King George III being the leader, began the story by addressing the British Parliament in October of 1775. The author, McCullough, travels through history and recognizes the courageous, unbeatable, and historical legend George Washington, who lead the great and well know American military. George Washington, one of the founding fathers, truly valued responsibility and understood what it meant to be a true leader. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Robert Frost’s “Nothing Gold Can Stay”, it states that nothing that is considered precious cannot last because time is always moving forward, making change inevitable. In the novel, Gatsby and Daisy both relate to elements in the poem. An allusion made in the poem can also be used to describe Gatsby and Daisy’s roles in the novel.

It shed light on the lives of the African Americans during the war and the decisions they made to fight with or against the colonies they were enslaved in.

In this chapter of the Founding Brothers, Ellis centers the idea of Slavery. He employs the idea of both hindsight and foresight to explore the collapse of the Congress. He displays the Congress to not stand up to its expectations at both private and public means.

Alfred F. Young and Lin-Manuel Miranda write stories that fall back to the same time period of the American Revolution. In Young’s book, The Shoemaker and the Tea Party, the story of George Robert Twelves Hewes and his experience and a lower class shoemaker during the Boston Tea Party and The Revolutionary war. Later we see his life 50 years after the Tea Party. In the musical, Hamilton, Miranda tells the story of Hamilton from before the Revolutionary War until his death in 1804.

Joseph J. Ellis reveals just how much each person’s decisions affect the history of America in Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation. It is a good representation of America’s past emphasizing the various people involved. It starts slow but improves as the book progresses by including multiple accounts of the same story, many different sources, and facts to verify the different statements. America came to be on July 4, 1776. Since this day, America has greatly expanded and become one of the world’s leading countries. The development of America and its government did not just occur on its own. It took many great men, difficult decisions, and quite
