Adaptive reuse is the act of finding a new use for a building. It is often described as a “process by which structurally sound older buildings are developed for economically viable new uses.” The recycling of buildings has long been an important and effective historic preservation tool. It initially developed as a method of protecting historically significant buildings from demolition.

• To refer to case studies of successful examples of adaptive reuse and understand the guidelines and the laws they followed
• To establish adaptive reuse as a strategy to adopt when deciding upon the fate of historic structures by looking at all the factors pertaining to adaptive reuse.

• Literature survey from books, articles and previous years’ research papers. To have a theoretical understanding and form basic ground for further study.

• Guidelines used for building selection. By-laws and rules that need to kept in mind, specific to historical monuments.

• Selection of case studies.
1. Literature review of sites that are easily accessible.

The scope of this dissertation is to study adaptive reuse as a process that protects, prolongs and safeguards the historic structures. To examines the various degrees of interventions carried out and how they affect the functionality and socio-economic viability.
LIMITATIONS
The international case studies and examples in the research would be secondary and any and all information gathered will be obtained from the internet and from any books if available.
The topic will cover only historic structures that have a direct effect on urban Indian cities, the study focuses on Delhi keeping in mind the time limitation and familiarity with the
