The adjustment to university life is influenced by many factors. These factors can be classified into negative and positive factors depending on their effect on the adjustment to university life. This essay will discuss the negative and positive factors that influence the adjustment of university life for first year students.
The adjustment into university life can be heavily influenced by homesickness. Homesickness is defined as distress or impairment caused by an actual or anticipated separation from home (Thurber and Walton, 2012). As these students move into a new chapter in their lives a series of factors can bring about homesickness. Through these subsections a conclusion is drawn upon the various factors within the sections that negatively affect a student whether it be the interaction with the work they are introduced to or the personal feelings towards adapting to university life it gives a clear idea on the various areas of adjustment the students are struggling in.
Academic adjustment focuses on the actual workload and the interaction students have with their respected departments or faculties (Sevnic and Gizir, 2014). As a conclusion drawn from the study it is clear that students struggle with the new teaching methods of university and the lack of spoon feeding they are used to receiving in high school (Sevnic and Gizir, 2014). Homesickness plays a big role in affecting the emotions of a student. The study confirmed this idea because many students admitted to feelings of homesickness, loneliness and shyness (Sevnic and Gizir, 2014). These feelings resulted in isolation from peers and a struggle into adjusting to their social surroundings. Another feeling that was common was that of failure. Many students did not want to disappoint their parents or be seen as a failure to others. These emotions consequently had a negative impact on the adjustment to university life because students had a lack of motivation.
Lastly Institutional emphasizes the sense of belonging and identity within the institution students are studying at (Sevnic and Gizir, 2014). The study showed that with the lack of identity or belonging towards the university a lack of motivation to work hard and perform well academically was a result.
