Adnan Syed was convicted of the murder of Hae Min Lee. It started on Jan 13th when Hae goes missing after school, then on Feb 9th the body is found in Leakin Park by Mr. S. on Feb 28 the police arrest Adnan and Jay interveiws with the detectives about the murder, Jay Interviews with the detectives 3 more times with each story changing little by little. Adnans trial begins on Dec 8th, then the judge declares a mistrial 7 days later. Adnan is convicted with the murder of Hae Min Lee, the conviction is overturned, and finally his conviction is being tried again. The connnnviction of Adnan Syed should be overturned because the State’s case doesn’t provide enough strong evidence to convict Adnan of murder. Adnan has an witness that says that he …show more content…
The state uses Jay as their key witness in the case against Adnan, but Jay's story changed where Adnan showed him Haes body. Jay says in one of his testimonies that Adnan showed him Haes body in the Best Buy parking lot, then he changes it in his testimony to “I went to pick him up from off of Edmondson Avenue at a strip and he, uh, popped the trunk open and…”(Serial 05.17). Jay was a friend of Adnan’s: they smoked weed and hung out together. The day of the murder according to Jay was that he picked up Adnan after he killed Hae and left her in the trunk of her car. This is where the two different places that he mentioned where Adnan showed Jay Hae’s body is the Best Buy parking lot and a strip off of Edmondson Avenue are important because these places aren’t similar either, one is a tech store and the other is an outdoor drug market. This change may seem small and insignificant but if you saw a dead body in the back of a trunk you would remember the spot that you saw something like that because it is a traumatic experience. In Jay's Testimony he says that he helped Adnan bury Haes body when the detective asked Jay “You helped him dig the hole.” and Jay said “Yes”(Serial 01.11). In Jenn’s story she talked to Jay and she asked Jay,“Did you help him? Do you know where the body is?” “No. I just took him to some place in …show more content…
Sarah Koenig spoke to some of Adnan’s friends and teachers about the breakup with Hae, and “nearly everyone I’ve spoke with, Adnan’s friends and teachers say he took the breakup like anyone would. Adnan’s friend Mac Francis said Adnan initially was devastated and jealous about the new boyfriend. Said he grumbled about it in a typical guy way, nothing strange. Everyone I talked to said some version of this, that he wasn’t rage filled or vindictive. He was just sad. “(Serial.02.10). Sarah Koenig is the author of the Serial podcast and almost everyone that Sarah Koenig talked to said that he was just sad and that he wasn’t ever filled with rage or vindictiveness to the point where he would go and murder her. Adnan was a good kid, he did well in school,he had a job, and he volunteered at the mosque, so the State's motive doesn't stand in the eyes of anyone that knew Adnan. Adnan wasn't heartbroken when Hae and him broke up and this is shown when Saad says that “it was still proof that he wasn't obsessed with Hae. He wasn't. I was like he's a p...I'm trying to conv-- explain I’m seventeen, like “He's a player! He has a lot of girls!” I was like, “he's talking to multiple--” I am too!”(Serial 02.11). Saad is Adnan’s best friend and he just further confirms that Adnan wasn't obsessed
In the podcast Serial, Asia alibied that Adnan was in the library at the time of the murder and would of had to time to meet Jay at Best Buy but, why didn’t this come up in the court case. This doesn’t make sense if you saw the appointed murderer of a girl that you grew up around wouldn’t you remember seeing him on this day and go to the detective or a school official. This came up years later, when Asia was questioned by Sara in the podcast. Asia was able to remember this years later but, not bring it up months after it happened, being a young adult this would of come to voice very
Adnan’s religion could have played a part to his and Hae’s break
Jay knew things that he wasn’t telling the cops or he was simply hiding something. Wouldn’t it be better to just tell the truth rather than make up a whole bunch of different stories? Some might think that Adnan was the cause of Hae Min Lee’s death because he was her ex-boyfriend and he had a motive to kill her. However, the night Hae went missing Adnan still tried to make sure she was ok and hung out with people that kept trying to check up on her. For example, in Serial it says “Adnan called her house 3 times to check to see if she was okay because she didn’t pick up her cousin that day”.
Lastly, a testimony from Asia McClain claims that she spoke to Adnan at the library 2:15 on January 13th. There might be a few reasons to hint to his guilt, but the evidence of his innocence outshines that greatly. First
Therefore, Adnan is innocent because he wouldn’t have a reason to kill her if they didn’t
One piece of evidence that proves that Adnan is innocent and that did not kill Hae Lee is Jay's inconsistencies in his stories and interviews when talking to the police. When Jay is being interviewed by the police he tells in chronological order what happened and what he remembers from that night when Hae Lee was murdered. Evertime Jay told his story a small detail or location would change and not match up with the original story. In Episode 4: Inconsistencies Jay is being interviewed by the police, they had asked “why would you lie about the location? ”. Jay responded with, “Because I’m
It just so happens to be a page that shows Leaking Park, which is where Hae was buried. Now that is weird. Another thing that was brought to my attention was how Hae was killed, through manual strangulation. Adnan was an EMT and knew how to strangle someone and had the training to know how to revive someone if he needed to. Could Adnan have been heartbroken over the breakup?
Adnan is adamant and staunch when talking about only having love and respect towards Hae and that he never will kill her. Adnan talks about the accusations being made about him. He does not agree with them, he states how no one can prove that he is angry with her. “People could say why. Oh, man, he is mad, this, that, or the other.
It was one of those big map books you buy at a gas station, police found it in the backseat of Hae’s car.yet many people think that since adnan and hae were going out for more that 8 months that when he was in her car he might of touched the map. ‘’The defense argued, ‘well, you can’t put a timestamp on fingerprints, they could’ve been six week-old fingerprints or six month-old fingerprints, there’s no way to tell.’’(ep 6 pg 85)The final reason of why i believe he killed hae is because there was a call and ones where we think the cell phone really was in Leakin Park. There’s a second person who puts Jay and Adnan together that night, and that’s Jenn.
(Koenig) As we learn about Adnan’s character, we can infer that Adnan is
Adnan is Innocent Do you remember what you did on this day, exactly one week ago? You might remember some things about that day, or you might remember nothing. How about if I asked what you did 6 weeks ago on this day? Could you tell me?
The police said they gathered enough evidence on Adnan to prove that he was the one who killed Hae. Evidence meaning they found Adnans prints in her car, using testimony, and since Adnan could not remember where he was at the exact moment of Hae's death. He said he might have been at track practice. Koening looks at the phone records, maps out the route that Jay says they made the night of Hae's death. The phone records were correct but still a
Putting these circumstances aside, it was said by many that the relationship was pretty typical and Adnan got over the breakup easily. This was said by teachers and friends of both Hae and Adnan. One of Hae’s friends, Becky, explained the relationship as “just a silly, teenage, high school, relationship” (Koenig “The Breakup”) which proves that Adnan was not as upset as the prosecution made him out to be at trial. Another notable aspect is that after Hae and Adnan broke up, Hae got in a small car accident and asked Adnan to come help her, her new boyfriend Don also showed up and confirms that him and Adnan had a cordial meeting and explains that they talked for 10 to 15 minutes even after the car situation had been figured out (Koenig “What We Know”). If Adnan was really that broken up about the breakup, he would not have been so friendly towards the new guy who seemed to take his place in Hae’s life.
She states “A year after Adnan was arrested and the case came to trial, Jay walked up to the witness stand. There’s a moment when Adnan muttered something to him” (45). By Adnan calling Jay pathetic he showed that he couldn’t believe Jay would rat him out. This incident shows that Adnan is a liar and is mad at Jay for going to the police, showing that he is guilty. Even after controlling himself through the whole case he snapped when he saw the man that betrayed him.
In Episode 2, “The Breakup”, Koenig herself even feels her biases towards Adnan, as she states, “He was working at his job. He was headed to college. About two weeks after his arrest, he gets an orientation packet from the University of Maryland. I don’t think he was some empty shell kid who betrayed his family and his religion and was now left with nothing and conjured up a murderous rage for a girl that broke his heart.” Koenig has heard great things about Adnan’s character; therefore, she has a hard time believing that he is guilty of such a
