Can you imagine being charged for a murder that you don't remember committing? That is exactly what happened to Adnan Syed. In January of 1999 Hae Min Lee’s strangled body was found in a park in Baltimore. One of the main suspects was her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed, he was eventually charged, found guilty of first-degree murder, and sentenced to life in prison. Adnan Syed is not guilty of murdering Hae Min Lee and should be released from prison because the evidence against him wasn’t solid enough to prove without a reasonable doubt that he was guilty. First, several major pieces of evidence place Adnan away from the scene of the crime; which causes me to believe he was wrongfully imprisoned. The letter from Asia provides a witness that he wasn’t …show more content…
is an impossible time for Adnan to reach the scene of the crime, let alone kill his girlfriend Hae Min Lee. During their investigation, Sarah Koenig and Dana Chivvis decide to test out the state’s timeline. While doing their walk-through, they discovered that it was almost impossible to get to the Best Buy, kill Hae, and then put her body in the trunk. Koenig said, “So that’s giving the State the benefit of the doubt, right? If she’s really hustling, maybe she can get to her car in say two minutes” (Koenig, “Route Talk”). In our school, it takes about 4 to 6 minutes to get to our cars, and West Delaware is roughly half the size of Woodlawn; so it’s very hard to imagine she would only take 2 minutes to get to her car. Next, Sarah runs back into the high school to grab a snack, and she is running! Another thing to take into account is the hallways being filled with other students, there would be a lot of dodging other students which would take longer. “Twenty-two minutes and two seconds. Yeah, we just did it in twenty-two minutes and two seconds. And that was leaving about a minute and a half in the car for the actual killing part,” Koenig said after their walk through (Koenig, “Route Talk”). Although it was a possible, it takes more than a minute to strangle a person to death. According to Wesley Clark, it takes about 5 minutes if the person strangles the other properly (Clark). This means it is virtually impossible …show more content…
Although Jay claims to be Adnan’s friend, he was the first person to blame Adnan. Then, he gives several statements to the police, but they continuously change. One difference is, in the beginning, he called himself “the criminal aspect of Woodlawn”, but later he claims that he “only got arrested once” (Koenig, “Inconsistencies”). It’s understandable that he would want to remove his first statement because it makes him look more like a suspect. Next, comes his lie about both of the boys getting high. He later changes it to it being just he who gets high, but why would this change in the story help him out? If Adnan had done the crime he would want to get an escape from all the stress he has just put on himself, so it would make more sense if he had smoked weed after the crime. Lastly, he lies about helping dig the hole in which Hae was buried. At first, he claims to have refused to dig the hole and then changes his mind and claims he helped dig the hole. I feel that he or his attorney wanted to change this to make Jay appear more prominent in the case, so he would seem more like an eye witness. Those are only a few of the lies Jay has told, and who knows what else he has lied about. Because Jay is so inconsistent and can’t keep his story straight it makes me wonder which version is the truth and if he is even a credible enough witness to be used in the
That is why on the night of the murder, Jay had told Jen exactly what had happened that afternoon. Jay consistently stated throughout his interviews that on that exact night, he had told Jen what Adnan had done. When Jen was brought for questioning, she testified that she had called Jay that afternoon, however, Adnan picked up and quickly told her that Jay will call her back once he was done. This shows that Adnan and Jay, were together that afternoon. Later that day, after 8:00 P.M. or when Adnan had finished burying Hae’s body, she had arranged to pick up Jay in the parking lot of Westview Mall.
STATEMENT OF THE CASE On January 13, 1999. the defendant Adnan Syed (seventeen), lived in Baltimore County, Maryland and was accused of the murder of his ex girlfriend, Hae Min Lee (seventeen). Jay Wilds is involved in the crime, an acquaintance of Adnan who claims to have helped bury the body of Hae Min Lee. Stephanie Mcpherson, was Jay Wilds girlfriend at the time of the murder.
They used a kid’s testimony named Jay to put Adnan away, but his claims keep changing over time. The state should not declare Adnan guilty because Jay’s testimony is too inconsistent. Jay is very inconsistent in his testimonies. According to Serial Timeline Map, Jay’s first interview he said that he saw Hae’s body in the trunk of her own car at the Edmondson strip
Adnan Syed is speciously guilty of first degree murder of Hae Min Lee. Syed claims to have no recollection of the events that occurred on January 13, 1999 which, in some cases could be a way to further prove one’s innocence, but it also means Syed has no solid alibi to contradict Jay Wilds narrative of what exactly happened that day. If a person does not have an alibi verified with witnesses to counteract another person’s story claiming you murdered another person on a particular day, they are probably guilty of committing that crime. However, Syed was asked to account for a day that happened 6 weeks prior to questioning, it’s not irregular that he cannot remember specific details especially if it was just a regular old day for him. The state uses Jay as their key witness in the case against Adnan, but Jay's story changed where Adnan showed him Haes body. Jay says in one of his testimonies that Adnan showed him Haes body in the Best Buy parking lot, then he changes it in his testimony to “I went to pick him up from off of Edmondson Avenue at a strip and he, uh, popped the trunk open and…”(Serial 05.17). Jay was a friend of Adnan’s: they smoked weed and hung out together. The day of the murder according to Jay was that he picked up Adnan after he killed Hae and left her in the trunk of her car. This is where the two different places that he mentioned where Adnan showed Jay Hae’s body is the Best Buy parking lot and a strip off of Edmondson Avenue are important because these places aren’t similar either, one is a tech store and the other is an outdoor drug market.
Jay tells investigators that Adnan was carefully plotting Hae’s murder. Later he says he didn't believe Adnan was serious and thought it was all a big joke. When Jay is questioned on why he didn't come forward to prevent this murder, he says he was afraid that he would be put in jail for selling drugs. Jay also says he kept quiet because Adnan threatened to hurt Stephanie, Jay’s girlfriend. Keep in mind Jay’s testimony is the state's main indication Adnan is guilty.
Yeah we just did it in twenty-two minutes and two seconds. And that was leaving about a minute and a half in the car for the actual killing part” (Koenig, “Route Talk”). That’s how long it took them to get to Best Buy, leaving only one minute and thirty seconds to do the strangulation. Now according to Google, it takes an average of
Imagine you're in the relationship of your dreams. You're madly in love and sacrificing everything for this one person. Then out of nowhere she loses feelings and dates someone else shortly after. Would you go as far to kill this one you loved so much? Whatever your answer may be Adnan Syed was deranged enough to kill his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee.
Jay had given false information and should be considered a suspect. He
Wrongfully Convicted Rumors, Secrets, and Drama, all typical aspects of the high school experience. Normally, the current relationship status of a track star would not matter to any adult. What isolates this instance is the outcome isn’t a messy break up and some tears shed, but instead a murder. Hae Min Lee went missing on January 13th, 1999. Six weeks later her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was convicted of murder.
It was his word alone that suggested that Adnan wanted Hae dead. Not a single person thought this, not Hae, not their family, not their friends and not even anyone at school. The only problem here is that Adnan doesn't seem to remember exactly where or what he was doing that day. Who could blame him though, we can’t even remember what we eat the other day. He had to remember something that happened 15 years ago and although it was a big memory something so simple as smoking weed, could cause someone to forget what they did.
These two reasons are all that a person should need to believe that Adnan didn't have enough motive, or time, to kill Hae. Jays testimony sets the timeline and proves there is enough evidence, which is not presented by Adnan’s lawyer, to say Adnan is innocent by a straying story. The time period where Hae could've been killed does not match Adnan’s timeline. Jay, who is a convicted felon, was the only witness and is trusted to give a good story. Cristina Gutierrez, who was Adnan’s lawyer, had medical issues that distracted her from using useful information in his case.
Jay lied in his interviews because he gave different stories to detectives and at the trials. Jay is lying, since his words do not match the cell phone log, Jay gives different witness accounts, and he lies the location of Hae’s body and the car. Adnan’s cell phone call log and the map do not support Jay’s story. Jay’s first interview; On January 13, 1999
She got a new boyfriend?’ And he didn’t know how to deal with that”(Cooper 19). How this disproves the original claim of Adnan being innocent is because this Jay talking about what would have been Adnan’s motive of the murder of Hae Min Lee. Which is reliable because he has never gone through something rough like the break up like Jay said but with him dealing with this and Hae getting a new boyfriend this definitely would have put him over and killed Hae. For the second quote this is from the serial podcast itself.
She states “A year after Adnan was arrested and the case came to trial, Jay walked up to the witness stand. There’s a moment when Adnan muttered something to him” (45). By Adnan calling Jay pathetic he showed that he couldn’t believe Jay would rat him out. This incident shows that Adnan is a liar and is mad at Jay for going to the police, showing that he is guilty. Even after controlling himself through the whole case he snapped when he saw the man that betrayed him.
