Adnan Syed Is Not Guilty

Can you imagine being charged for a murder that you don't remember committing? That is exactly what happened to Adnan Syed. In January of 1999 Hae Min Lee’s strangled body was found in a park in Baltimore. One of the main suspects was her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed, he was eventually charged, found guilty of first-degree murder, and sentenced to life in prison. Adnan Syed is not guilty of murdering Hae Min Lee and should be released from prison because the evidence against him wasn’t solid enough to prove without a reasonable doubt that he was guilty. First, several major pieces of evidence place Adnan away from the scene of the crime; which causes me to believe he was wrongfully imprisoned. The letter from Asia provides a witness that he wasn’t …show more content…

is an impossible time for Adnan to reach the scene of the crime, let alone kill his girlfriend Hae Min Lee. During their investigation, Sarah Koenig and Dana Chivvis decide to test out the state’s timeline. While doing their walk-through, they discovered that it was almost impossible to get to the Best Buy, kill Hae, and then put her body in the trunk. Koenig said, “So that’s giving the State the benefit of the doubt, right? If she’s really hustling, maybe she can get to her car in say two minutes” (Koenig, “Route Talk”). In our school, it takes about 4 to 6 minutes to get to our cars, and West Delaware is roughly half the size of Woodlawn; so it’s very hard to imagine she would only take 2 minutes to get to her car. Next, Sarah runs back into the high school to grab a snack, and she is running! Another thing to take into account is the hallways being filled with other students, there would be a lot of dodging other students which would take longer. “Twenty-two minutes and two seconds. Yeah, we just did it in twenty-two minutes and two seconds. And that was leaving about a minute and a half in the car for the actual killing part,” Koenig said after their walk through (Koenig, “Route Talk”). Although it was a possible, it takes more than a minute to strangle a person to death. According to Wesley Clark, it takes about 5 minutes if the person strangles the other properly (Clark). This means it is virtually impossible …show more content…

Although Jay claims to be Adnan’s friend, he was the first person to blame Adnan. Then, he gives several statements to the police, but they continuously change. One difference is, in the beginning, he called himself “the criminal aspect of Woodlawn”, but later he claims that he “only got arrested once” (Koenig, “Inconsistencies”). It’s understandable that he would want to remove his first statement because it makes him look more like a suspect. Next, comes his lie about both of the boys getting high. He later changes it to it being just he who gets high, but why would this change in the story help him out? If Adnan had done the crime he would want to get an escape from all the stress he has just put on himself, so it would make more sense if he had smoked weed after the crime. Lastly, he lies about helping dig the hole in which Hae was buried. At first, he claims to have refused to dig the hole and then changes his mind and claims he helped dig the hole. I feel that he or his attorney wanted to change this to make Jay appear more prominent in the case, so he would seem more like an eye witness. Those are only a few of the lies Jay has told, and who knows what else he has lied about. Because Jay is so inconsistent and can’t keep his story straight it makes me wonder which version is the truth and if he is even a credible enough witness to be used in the
