The most difficult thing an author can do when telling a story, is attracting an audience, and maintaining the audience’s engagement. In Serial, while telling the story of Adnan Syed, Sarah Koenigs attracts the audience with her purpose which is proving that Adnan Syed was wrongfully convicted and isn't completely guilty. Sarah maintains the attention of her audience by using emotional, and logical appeal, while also establishing credibility. In other words she uses the rhetoric made up of Pathos, Logos, and Ethos. Ethos is credibility appeal in rhetoric, it's the the appeal of ethics and it convinces the audience that the speaker is reliable. An example of this in Serial is when Sarah, hires detective Jim Trainum, to help look into Adnan’s case. Sarah says “But clearly the jury found Jay believable, or believable enough. After a six week trial, they convicted Adnan in just two hours. We …show more content…
Examples of logos are statistics, facts, evidence, and anything logical. In Serial, Sarah uses lot of logos because she’s reexamining a murder case, that was technically already closed. An example of Sarah’s use of logos is when she says “Here’s what he’s talking about. In both of Jay’s taped statements, there’s a before. A period of time before the tape recorder is turned on. When the cops first bring Jay in on February 28th, they talked to him for about an hour before the tape went on. Then, on March 15th, the second interview. Jay signs his initials to an official explanation of rights form at 3:15 p.m. Then the tape starts.” She brings evidence to discredit Jay and the detectives in the case. Afterwards she notices the time it takes for the interview. Sarah and Jim believe that Jay worked with the investigators to clean up his story. This seems to be evidence not taken into consideration during Adnan’s case, which is why Sarah looked into it. This use of evidence or logos by Sarah helps persuade the audience to believe Adnan isn’t
Well known reverend and writer, Jonathan Edwards, in his sermon, Sinners in the hands of an Angry God, describes the dramatic fate of those who haven 't accepted Jesus Christ. Edwards purpose is to persuade members of his congregation to be “born again”. To be born again means to accept Jesus Christ. He creates a frightening tone in order to frighten unconverted men to believe in Jesus. Throughout his sermon he continuously reminds the reader of hell.
Jay tells investigators that Adnan was carefully plotting Hae’s murder. Later he says he didn't believe Adnan was serious and thought it was all a big joke. When Jay is questioned on why he didn't come forward to prevent this murder, he says he was afraid that he would be put in jail for selling drugs. Jay also says he kept quiet because Adnan threatened to hurt Stephanie, Jay’s girlfriend. Keep in mind Jay’s testimony is the state's main indication Adnan is guilty.
The police were coaching Jay on what to say based on the hard evidence that they needed to confirm. This is highly plausible because of the parallels between the evidence in the police file and what Jay says. For example, the only road names that Jay ever mentions are the ones that are marked on the maps in the police file. Also, Jay tells the police he was somewhere that would have been impossible for him to be at the time they spoke of, but the location matches up with an incorrectly marked cell tower on one map - the cell tower that transferred a call from adnan’s phone at that
Ethos is equivalent to credibility. Waldinger clearly makes his audience believe what he says by explaining surveys which lead to really strong data. He also states several different quotes by Marc Twain, which provided important pieces of evidence and different perspectives to his speech. Waldinger also states different research facts building a stronger main point. Lastly, he explains one of the oldest and longest study ever, The Harvard study.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. MLK obtained his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Morehouse College. MLK’s occupation was a Baptist minister and social activist. MLK was African American, a target for racial segregation in those times. MLK wrote his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” to be released April 16th, 1963.
Ethos means that the speaker is establishing their credibility to the audience. An example of ethos in his speech is “I have been asked many times, "Why do musicians give so much time to charitable
In Why is Cornel West Playing a Human Shield for the Democrats – Once Again?, Ajamu Baraka, a human-rights activist, discusses the endorsement Cornel West, a prominent African-American activist and self-proclaimed progressive, gave to Democratic Presidential Candidate, Bernie Sanders. Baraka claims when one analyzes Sanders, an alleged democratic progressive, he/she will see he is essentially a mainstream Democrat. Cornel West’s endorsement of this individual, rather than building independent black power, is “…sheep-dogging” for the Democratic party as it only builds socialist support for its mainstream agenda. Ajamu Baraka introduces Cornel West by noting his history of supporting mainstream Democrats. After he is introduced, Baraka refutes
One example of ethos that Martin Luther used in his speech, “And every now and then we’d get in jail and we’d see the jailers looking through the windows being moved by our prayers, and being moved by our words and our songs.” This makes him credible because it is stating how he had been jailed previously, and he is also willing to go back, if it meant getting a change in civil rights. “But somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech.
Also, Saddam used another Machiavelli method that he mentioned in his piece, and he chose fear over love. I remember that everyone feared Saddam because he was ruthless against whoever threatens his authority. Saddam created this fear when he started his presidency because I think that he thought that a leader would not survive in his position without fear. For example, before he became president, he was the Vice President of Iraq. The president at that time who was Ahmed Hassan Al-bakr was forced to resign by Saddam because Saddam wanted to take his place.
One of the major rhetorical strategies scrutinized when analyzing an article is ethos. Ethos are the things that make the author seem credible or trustworthy. It will not always just tell you right in the text if the author is credible. Sometimes a small amount of research needs to be done, almost as if having a background check done. We know instantly that he is a commentator for the New York Times.
Witness for the Prosecution “The ultimate mystery is one’s own self” (Sammy Davis Jr.). Mysteries have an allure that keep audiences intrigued and engaged on what will happen next. “Witness for the prosecution”, originally written by Agatha Christie, is no different in the sense that both the short story and visual adaption keep the audience on the edge of their seat as the apprehensive story unfolds. Although the storyline for the short story and movie adaptions both follow the same repertoire, there are a vast number of significant differences that keep the audience entertained and in suspense of what is to come next.
Ethos means convincing by the author. We tend to believe people whom we respect and look up to as role models. Persuading someone with their role model to buy the product. It like a endorsement deal with celebrity. Nike uses the most ethos to draw the age groups together to sell the product by signing endorsement deals with athletes.
Austin King Ms. Den Otter A.P. English Language and Composition President Obama Speech Analysis On the morning of September 11th, terrorists hijacked 4 planes, 2 of which were crashed into the World Trade Center Buildings, another hit the Pentagon, and one was crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. This tragic morning in American history caused the death of almost 3000 people, and the leader of Al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, was behind it. After planning a mission for around 4 years to execute Osama bin Laden, on May 2, 2011, he was killed by US special forces. President Obama follows this event with a speech, its goal being to inform the American people of the death of the man who had caused the death of so many loved ones, and achieves this by using rhetorical devices such as parallel structure and appeals to emotion. In the beginning of President Obama’s speech announcing the death of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, he reminds the American people of the tragic events that took place on the morning of 9/11, when “nearly 3,000 citizens were taken from us.”
We all know the three main aspects of argument: logos, ethos, and pathos. I would list the definitions, but let’s be honest, that’s boring. So let’s think of ethos as our moms, pathos as the emotional teens, and logos as a book. Moms and the emotional teen go together, we’ve all been there. That emotional teen can persuade you to do things you never expected, like peer pressure.
