A better life, a new opportunity, and a safe living environment are the main reasons why the immigrants left their home; however, they had a hard life in the new country. According to Michael Jones-Correa, outsider and insider are the two categories of immigrants, and the differences between two types of immigrants are legal identity, common language, and social acceptance. In the article, “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant”, Vargas is an outsider in that he does not have a legal status in the United States whereas he is an insider in that he get the social recognize. In the novel Book of Unknown Americans, Alma is an outsider because she lack of common language and social acceptance in the United States even though she has a legal identity.

Jose Antonio Vargas became part of the large illegal immigration system as a result of his mother illegally flying Vargas into the United States at the age of twelve. As a teenager, Vargas grew up with knowledge of his illegal status and managed to evade authorities while living a decent life. But, as Vargas started his path to a high profile career in journalism, his illegal status began to follow him and therefore Vargas’ situation was getting complicated. Eventually, Vargas in an emotional piece declared his illegal immigrant status and naturally, people chose to either defend Vargas or censure Vargas. Rory O’Connor is an example of someone who chose to defend Vargas after the declaration.
America Founded on Immigration When reading “Our Brave New World of Immigration” by Victor Davis Hanson, he argues that we ask too little of our immigrants in today’s society, and that we have entered a new world of immigration that allows immigrants to not be responsible human beings in society today. After viewing the title of the essay, I expected to hear an empowering essay on how far immigration has come. However, after reading the essay I perceived the authors’ persona to be belittling towards immigration. Also, he seems to have tunnel vision towards undocumented immigrants, by not considering that the undocumented immigrants, he speaks of may not even be undocumented immigrants.

In the mid 1980’s my mother immigrated to the United States of America with the help of one of her sister who was already living in California. She left me in the care of my grandmother who became like a mother overtime (Hondagneu-Sotelo, 2007:25). Growing up in Mexico I never considered the type of work my mother was doing in the US, but I would hear las lenguas (people talking) in my neighborhood, saying that my mother was likely barriendo los doloras (sweeping up dollars) from the streets en el Norte (in the North). At night, I would lay in bed thinking about my mother sweeping up dollar bills from the streets.
