Big Data is a new term labeled the growth and availability of data, both structured and unstructured (Lycett, 2013). Data can be captured anywhere and at any time and are considered big when they cannot be processed using currently widespread technology, such as relational databases or spreadsheet applications. Besides the advancement and dramatic cost reduction of technology for systems, storage, and processing, the growth of the amount of data in digital form to support business decisions is driven by two general factors. However, Foxwoods Resort Casino has managed to overcome the odds and use big data to their benefit in order to get a “far richer understanding of its customers’ preferences” and build around those preferences. Foxwood decided to invest in SAS analytics, a very high tech analytics technology, and use IBM’s data warehousing technology, and they now have a far greater speed with a lower cost than before. This is what allows them to compete with all their competitors at a higher level, they have found an edge over their competitors by understanding consumer behavior and come up with promotional offers tailored to the consumers previous history at the casino. They can also do things that were not possible before, such as; “can integrate data from our various back-end systems that we could never do before” and “ can load our retail data and employee scheduling data to create reports about sales compared to staffing, which lets us maximize our staffing and optimize our customer service." This is due to the large increase of the competitors in the casino and resort market, and therefore casinos must find new ways to attract customers, keep customer loyalty high, and make their casino experience better than the rest of their competitors. Using all the data stored on their data systems, which are kept in large data warehouses, the resort casino can properly allocate all their resources and promotions to the appropriate branches that are of heavy traffic or in need of more business.
