Synthetic pesticide is an advantageous product that has provided a solution for low crop yield mainly by eliminating unnecessary factors like insects and weeds. In 1930s, after the World War II, synthetic pesticide was first introduced in United States to increase the crop yield beyond the pre-World War level because the Second World War influenced worlds’ agriculture with huge decrease in crop yield (Douglas Futuyma, 2005). In 1950s, pesticides application, specifically insecticides, resulted successfully as the amount of crop yield exceeded the pre-World War level (Susan Aldbridge, 1998). Commonly recognized type of pesticide is insecticide but more than 10 different pesticides are being produced to be effective against specific pests. Some examples are followings: antimicrobials, which is to control germs and microbes, fungicides that is to control fungal problems such as molds and rust, and herbicides for inhibiting the growth of unwanted plants that are weeds (US Environmental Protection Agency, 2015). Since applying pesticides to crops is one of the most commonly used methods to control those not needed pests, farmers depend heavily on pesticides.
Likewise, usage of pesticides has benefits towards our society. With economic aspect, pesticide production is about $50 billion dollar business. Not only its price in business but also about 40% of them are exported to other countries, which means production of pesticides brings economic profits to the exporting country. In
There is always opposition to pesticides because of the harm that it can cause on the environment and the animals alike. Pesticides though have saved a lot of hard work for farmers over the past couple of decades because it does all the dirty work, for example, the killing of weeds and other pests. Pesticides have also saved a lot of money for farmers by preventing pests from damaging crops or taking the nutrients and water supply away from crops. (Whitford, 7) In the future we need to start to find less toxic ways to prevent pests from attacking the crops and vegetation. This would prevent a lot of the other costs associated with pesticides for example, health costs for farmers that are exposed to the toxic chemicals or the killing of the habitats in the surrounding areas.
Many countries in India continue to use pesticides that have been banned in Western Europe. Much of the cotton used in Europe is produced in the western part of India. These pesticides are extremely dangerous and have been linked to the rapid increase of cancer for the workers. The great demand for cotton forces workers to continue using these dangerous pesticides. Individuals need the money so badly that they are willing to risk their health to work.
