Golden Rice
Introduction
Rice is the major essential food for a huge number of people all over the world. It is commonly utilized in its grinded form with outer layers separated, such as tegmen, pericarp and aleurone layers. Consequently, the eatable part of rice seeds consists of the endosperm, filled with protein bodies and starch grains, but it misses many fundamental nutrients for the health maintenance, like the carotenoids showing provitamin A-activity. Therefore, dependence on rice as a main food staple causes vitamin A deficiency, a severe public health problem in not less than 26 countries including hugely populated areas of Asia, Latin America and Africa (Beyer et al., 2002). Golden rice is a form of rice with biosynthesis of beta-carotene

Golden rice was initially produced in 1982 as an opening move from the Rockefeller Foundation (Beyer et al, 2002). In 1992, a group of research specialists and scientists gathered to conduct studies on golden rice advantages and disadvantages (Wright et al, 2005). Potrykus and Beyer developed a rather complicated biosynthetic crop that could be modified to produce healthful and more plentiful grains like rice. A number of lines with various concentrations of β-carotene emerged from the work performed in the laboratories. The aim of the research was to create adequate β-carotene in these rice lines to fulfill the recommended daily requirements, which has been now been …show more content…
An increase in child deaths (under the age of five) has been linked, in the last few years, to deficiencies in protein, zinc and vitamin A. The most recent form of golden rice that was invented in 2005 differs from the original strain through the addition of three new beta-carotene genes (Tang et al, 2009).
Moreover, this recent form of golden rice is called Golden Rice 2 because it includes higher levels of beta-carotene then the original golden rice. Golden rice was incipiently developed, with the help of environmental activists, to enhance, improve, support and upgrade health and well-being and it has achieved its goals. The discovery of golden rice has decreased the risk of a variety of health conditions and illnesses. Golden rice has been examined in the Philippines for more than two seasons in two different locations in 2012.

The case People v. Rice is about a girl named Nina Rice, who was charged with information with the crimes of theft and computer crimes. In 2003, the defendant filed for unemployment compensation benefits with Colorado Department of Labor and Employment by using an interactive computer system which she could communicate over the telephone. She made biweekly claims for unemployment for over five months. Each time she applied, they asked if she worked during the week she applied for it and she said no every time.
On day one no seeds germinated. By day two, seeds in the control group, 15% and 25% experimental groups had germinated. On day two the experimental group with 25% concentration of miracle gro’ had the most seeds
Scott Deeter was the president and CEO of Ventria Bioscience, a Sacramento, California-based biotechnology firm that developed an innovative process to produce pharmaceutical proteins in the seeds of genetically modified rice, which was used to create a medicine to lessen the severity of childhood diarrhea. However, Scott Deeter and Ventria faced many problems. One being that the company was unsuccesful in getting the California Secretary if Agriculture to grant them the necessary permits in order to plant the 120 acres of bioengineered rice to begin commercial-scale production. Another being that many different organizations opposed what they were doing, such as, environmentalists, food safety activists, consumer advocates, and rice farmers. There is also a risk of contamination, and genetically altered plant possibly cross-breeding with wild plants.
Majority of food manufacturers use a whole lot of chemicals and artificial ingredients in high amounts to achieve the desired taste, texture and shelf life. However, in the long run extensive consumption of products that contain such ingredients can have adverse affect on human health. This is one of the reasons why health conscious consumers avoid processed food and look for healthy recipes that use natural ingredients and which are also easy to cook, thus giving them the satisfaction of eating healthy food. What Is That Makes HFCS Bad? According to research ninety percent of the corn produced in US is genetically modified, and this is the same corn that goes into the making of high fructose corn syrup which is an artificial sweetener.
5. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Conclusions From this study, we realize that Ghana has had a long standing history of gold production, dating back to the colonial era: The economy continues to be a dominant gold producer in Africa and the world. Further, gold production has contributed significantly towards the development of the economy of Ghana; providing the much needed foreign exchange earnings; as well as jobs and incomes for the citizenry. The librazilization of gold production in 1989 following the Economic Recovery Program (ERP) in 1983 allowed the operation of small scale gold mining. Small scale gold production has led to increase in gold production and export, however, liberalization, gold export and the existence of small scale
Education on the issue is important since “Approximately 17 million African children die from hunger and malnutrition every year” (“Health Issues,” par. 4). Africa has been drastically affected by malnutrition, as shown through this representation of death rates. The effects of this disease “ deprives young African children of critical vitamins to their health. More than half a million children suffer from vitamin A deficiency, which cripples young immune systems. Inadequate supplements of vitamin A can lower child mortality rate by more than one-fifth” (“Heath of African,” par. 6).
Then the current controversies of over processed foods was looked at and analyzed. Future predictions were researched to see what could be changed to help people be aware of what they could be doing to their bodies. Finally a survey was taken to see how much people know about processed foods and how much they consume them. It was found
The rise of nutritionism is because replacing foods with nutrients makes consumers’ life easier when they no longer need to take vitamin pills. For example, in an essay “The Seeds of Gold” the author Peter Pringle introduces a GMO, the golden rice, that is invented from the modification of regular rice’s gene so it can contain more Vitamin A (Pringle 19). Consuming the nutrients from the golden rice can effectively help with Vitamin A deficiency. Critics argue that Pollan’s argument is flawed for this reason, but they fail to envision the negative effects of the overly emphasizing nutrients in a diet. As this trend continues, “the typical real food has more
As a result of this, the manufacturers of this product may ask a higher price for their rice and the GNP per capita in Vietnam
It is a natural type of sugar, and is proven to help the immune system whenever we are sick. The fragment on fruits was a nice touch as the reader has read nothing but sugary drinks instead of foods to eat instead. In conclusion, Nanci Hellmich has written her article accurately with an informative flare that sparks the reader’s curiosity. She also gives valid information that supports her
According to Northoff (2007), nutrition is critical for a healthy and active life, but many people around the world still have no access to sufficient and nutritious food because of poverty and lack of nutrition education. Moreover, Riddle (2005) stresses that nutrition education is a key for developing the skills and motivation needed to eat well, and is especially important in situations where families have limited resources. The benefits of nutrition education and counselling can directly influence nutritional status, consequently, helping in attaining the millennium development goal (MDG) to reduce the prevalence of hunger and malnutrition (Garcia, 2008). In a recent preliminary study conducted by ENDESA in 2007, the way in which the mother’s educational level influenced malnutrition was observed. Statistics reveal that 15.4 percent of children of mothers with no education suffered from chronic malnutrition, while 9.4 percent and 4.7 percent in children of mothers with secondary or higher education levels respectively (Acevedo & Menendez, 2006).
Thus, the causes of undernourishment and of death from hunger and malnutrition of children are immensely complex, and they cannot be simply attributed to war or natural catastrophes. They are primarily due
According to the royal society, between1930 and 2010 the world’s population grew from 2 billion to 6.8 billion ,so the Continuing population causes a consumption growth and that means the global demand will increase over the next years and growing competition for land, water and energy will increase too(Black, 2010). Growth of population will affect on some countries ability to produce food especially in the poor developing countries, so improved nutrition is central to improved income generation, poverty reduction, and provide a good food quality. Lack of food quality has an impact on mother’s nourishment because they are more likely to give a birth, so mothers which are malnourished later will give birth of babies with a less healthier, growth retardation are associated with reduced physical activity, impairment of
What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Genetically Modified Foods? Genetically modified (GM) foods are organisms that have had new genes added to themselves from other organisms. Being around since 1994, they are produced in a way that is very similar to genetic engineering. The technique used in this type of crop management has been introduced to ensure farmers and merchants are able to improve crop or food quality in a more efficient way.
Rice cultivation is so widespread, development of four distinct types of ecosystems has occurred. They are commonly referred to as irrigated, rain fed lowland, upland, and flood-prone agro ecological zones. Emma Helen Blair and James A, Robertson, who edited and annotated the 55 volume books of history The Philippine Islands, the description in volume 32, chapter XLIII. “They saw and learned from the Indians, they had much to say in
