When I was younger, one of the first things people would ask me when we met was “Where are you from?” In response, I always said, “McKeesport”, but felt contempt every time that word left my mouth because I knew my hometown was a cesspool of poverty and demoralization. Even though I still know McKeesport is a bad place to live, the feeling attached to my response to inquiries about my hometown has changed. Instead of contempt, I feel determined to enact a citywide metamorphosis.

Situation: As a patrol officer, I am only doing my job when I stop a car for running a red light. Unfortunately, the driver of the car happens to be the mayor. I give her a ticket anyway, but the next morning I get a call into the captain’s office and told in no uncertain terms that I screwed up, for there is an informal policy extending “Courtesy” to city politicians. Several nights later, I observe the mayor’s car weaving erratically across lanes and speeding. What would you do? What if the driver were a fellow police officer? What if it were a high school friend?
Cities improve due to innovation, but humans residing in them may not. The Industrial Revolution was a period in time where new inventions helped labor become less taxing and more efficient in the South. On the other hand, the North developed urban cities, which attracted many people. Urban cities had become the epitome of civilization: ease of life and wealth was present, but not available to everyone. To elaborate, these urban cities provided job opportunities to women. Nevertheless, the poor lived in terrible conditions, child labor was common, conflicts arose between immigrants and American citizens, and the government approved of rich people’s selfishness.

Settlement within North America first started in the year 1493. Settlement within South Carolina on the other hand, started in the year 1521. Francisco Gordillo first sailed to the Carolina coast in 1521, and many historians believe he anchored near present day Georgetown. Although Gordillo was the first to explore the Carolina area, he was not the first to try to settle the land. He quickly angered the natives by capturing them and selling them into slavery in the Caribbean. Soon after Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon led an attempt to settle the South Carolina territory with approximately 600 settlers. His settlement did not last due to harsh weather conditions, sickness, low food supplies, and hostile natives. The Spanish settlement lasted a mere six months before the Spanish deported. Another failed
Did you know that the Cherokee Nation is one of only three federally recognized tribes that has the sovereign right to control their nation? That means that they have the right to control what goes on within their nation, despite the states government. Although the tribe may be doing well today, that hasn’t always been the case. The Cherokee Tribe had to overcome many obstacles and heartaches. Shortly after the first Cherokee entered the state in the vicinity of Travelers Rest in 1450, the Cherokees were put through many challenging times. (Cherokee Nation) They not only had their land taken many times, but their people were killed and forced out of their homes. Although their history is heartbreaking,
