Introduction: There are many abnormalities that may affect the brain such as, seizures, tumors and stroke. To evaluate this type of diseases, we need special procedures like MRI and CT. In this report I’m going to talk about MRI and the special techniques that used in the case of stroke. Magnetic resonance imaging is non-invasive procedure that provides anatomical and functional information. MRI provides cross-sectional images with an ability to reconstruct data to other plains. Unlike CT and conventional Radiography, MRI don’t use ionizing radiation to produce images, it use the interaction between the body tissue, the magnetic field and the radio waves. MRI was originally known as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), because of the important role that the proton of the nuclei plays. Advantage and disadvantage of MRI: Advantages of MRI Disadvantages of MRI - Angiographic images can be done without using contrast. - Have many techniques like diffusion and perfusion which allow diagnosing specific tissue characterization. - Images can be produce in 3 dimensions. - Can also use for pregnant patient. - MRI is expensive. - Patient may be claustrophobia. - Not save for patient with metal implants. - It’s a long time procedure. Advantages of MRI in stroke imaging over CT in the stroke imaging - In MRI, DWI imaging has a high sensitivity for acute ischemia. - DWI helps to visualize the affected area within minutes of the stroke onset, while in CT to diagnose ischemic stroke
