Mobile Phones: A Blessing or a Curse? There are many mobile phones around now-a-days, the bulk of them being smartphones. They have plenty of advantages and disadvantages. Numerous children have these phones – do yours? Do they use it or do they abuse it? We all thin that mobile phones are great. But are you aware of how many disadvantages there are? One of the main disadvantages of mobile phones is the short battery life they have. Mobile phones have plenty of battery life, not until you start playing the addictive games! The latest smartphone has around 2 days of battery life. Another element of mobile phones that will drain the battery is charging it overnight. The phone from 0-100% takes around two hours to charge. Despite being charged, the longer the charger is plugged in, the battery life diminishes. On the other hand, many people would argue that mobile phones have plenty of advantages. They can be used for children in school classroom lessons such as create short movies, read and analyse books and set homework reminders. They can use a calculator in maths and find definitions and synonyms in English. But this doesn’t always work. Sometimes you will be unable to find a sustainable internet connection, or returning to my previous argument, the battery may drain. After thoroughly examining three topics for and three topics against mobile phones, I now believe that mobile phones are more of a curse than a blessing. During the thorough examination I took both positives and negatives into consideration and I now believe that there are more negatives than positives to mobile phones because of my personal experience with mobile phones. I’ve had to shut off and restart my mobile phone numerous times and stop all processes to unfreeze the phone countless
Overuse of cell phones is undoubtedly beginning to put people at risk. Besides cell phones, television has negative effects as well. Advertisements on television harm British children from the exposure to "about 10,000 adverts every year on television, in addition to hundreds of 'pop-ups' on the internet. " Thus, children pressure themselves to be "cool".
Every year, thousands of pedestrians are injured as they walk in cities. Some researchers say 1 out of 10 of those injuries are caused by a “distracting mobile device such as a phone or portable music player” (“Walking While Looking down”). Undoubtedly, the risk for injury in a crowded city increases greatly when technology is a distraction. In this day and age, technology is all over the place, no matter where you are in a moments time, technology is all around you. Lots of times technology is used positively, but more often than not, technology is not used wisely and safely.
The non-fiction reading called “A Cell of Our Own Making” by Moira Farr concentrated on cellphones and their importance in people’s daily life. The author goes in detail on how cellphones are given more importance and how far we has a society dependent on cellphone. The reading states that “It was now standard to ask student to turn off their cellphones before class, they ring anyways and one of student asked the teacher to leave the class just so he can answer the phone (Farr, 6)”. Farr states student consider cellphone more of an emergency then an actual emergency. The author tells us how people are too invested in their cellphones and how they would prefer talking on the cellphone over in person communication.
Disconnected With more than five billion people in the world now owning some kind of mobile phone, it’s hard to imagine a world without these devices. Without your smartphone who would tend to your crops on Hay Day? Who would take care of your Snapstreaks while you’re gone?
Turkle states that, “the mere presence of a phone on a table between them (two people) or in the periphery of their vision changes both what they talk about and the degree of connection they feel.” While this may be true, along with the other studies on how technology is detrimental to society, there as also positives aspects that contribute to society as well. “It is not about giving our phones but about using them with greater intention” (Turkle). This quote by Turkle embodies how I feel about the technology debate and the more new technology and phones have developed the more we have analyzed whether or not they are good for our society, and at what age kids should use them.
