The advantages and disadvantages of free range versus conventional pig production systems can be addressed from the perspective of management, performance and health of pigs in both systems.

From the management perspective, free range pig production systems as opposed to conventional systems require simple portable and flexible housing with low cost fencing materials. Usually cheaper local pig breeds and outdoor-adapted breeds for certain environment are generally more suitable for free-range systems in contrast to the more expensive exotic breeds used in conventional systems. Free-range pigs as opposed to conventional pigs are exposed to the impact of a number of environmental factors. Among these, temperature is one of the key factors determining the success of the free-range enterprise as it can lead to very high mortality. Generally, free-range pigs have a higher mortality compared to conventionally housed pigs. Many other factors can contribute to this high mortality; death of especially the piglet due to crushing, disease, heat stress and poor nutrition.
