There is a common fear for everyone at a family gathering, where we will meet relatives that we interact with once in a blue moon – updating them with our education levels. Due to the competitive nature of Singapore, parents are always afraid that their children are lagging behind as compared to other children. With this perception in mind, extra help such as private tuition will be one of the solutions. However, is the increasing prevalence of private tuition really a good sign to students in Singapore? Even though there is a common opinion about the fact that private tuition provides a platform for students to revise their work again, it brings about more negative impacts on the majority of the students, such as stagnant bad results, thinking that it is a necessity to have tuition, sleep deprivation and hence, becoming the root cause of all the negative impacts brought about.
Most critics that are supportive of private tuition would have mentioned that having private tuition helps students to have extra help with their school work, especially if they are slower as compared to their classmates. They will be able to build up their foundation better and clear their misconceptions on certain concepts in different subjects. This will in turn boost the confidence of students with weak academic results and hence bring about a very positive impact on them. However, this only affects a minority of the student population.
