Definition:

A douche is a tool used to introduce a circulation of water into the body for clinical or hygienic motives .It is commonly associated with vaginal douche for irrigation purposes.

ADVANTAGES OF DOUCHE:

• Douche helps to clean the vagina form the leftover blood droplets after their monthly cycle.

• It aids to get rid of bad smell and discharge from the vagina.

• Some women feel cleaner than irrigating the external genitals.

DISADVANTAGES:

• There are more cons of douching than pros. Some of them are:

• Vaginal Douching can promote infections associated with vagina like bacterial vaginosis. It is due to the fact that the vaginal flora is disturbed by the ingredients present in it (like fragrances, iodine, baking soda, etc). As a result, vagina becomes more prone to different infections as bacteria get optimum environment for its growth.

• It can also cause Pelvic Inflammatory disease (PID)in some women which will cause further complications during pregnancy.

• Douching may also increase the risk of cervical cancer.

But these disadvantages can be overcome by using a hygiene and safe douching techniques and using only water as a vehicle.

Douches can be divided on the basis of their site of application:

Eye douches: It helps to get rid of foreign particles and discharges from the eyes.

Nasal douches: Nasal douche is meant to clean nasal cavity from foreign particles with the help of bulb syringes.
