Essay On Bioremediation

1408 Words6 Pages

bioremediation is caused by the activities of anaerobic or aerobic heterotrophic microorganisms. Microbial activity is affected by a number of physico-chemical environmental parameters. The factors that have direct affect on bioremediation are nutrients energy sources (electron donors), temperature, electron acceptors, , pH, and restrictive substrates . One of the main difference between vadose zone soils, surface soils, and groundwater sediments is the structure and type of organic material. Surface soils, which generally get a lot of organic material from plants, will have more organic matter content. The high organic matter content is related to higher number of microbes and bigger variety of microbial populations. The organic matter acts as a depository of …show more content…

Cleaning up toxic waste is not easy .it usually requires time and lot of money.bioremediation is cost effective and environmental friendly.

3.5 Disadvantages Of Bioremediation

Bioremediation, seems to be blessing the modern day environmental conditionds but its not without flaws and drawbacks.
1. bioremediation is not an option for recalcitrant pollutants .it can degrade only those pollutants that atre easily biodegradable.
2. sometimes cleavage products are formed during bioremediation that are more toxic than parent pollutant.
3. High specificity of bioprocesess can become a problem. For effective biodegradation capable microbe populations, otimumgrowth conditions, suitable level of contaminants and nutrients is required.all this is hard to manage.
4. extrapolation from pilotscale or bench scale to full scale field operations can become a problem. 5. bioremediation is hard to carry out in an environment where mictures of pollutants are unevenly distributed within environment. So research in that area is need of the day.
6. polluting compounds may be present as liquids, solids, and gases.
7. Compared to other treatment options like incineration or removal of soil, bioremediation can take
