Cell-based biosensors can be defined as a unique device that helps restrained living cells to sense elements, joined with sensors and transducers to detect the cellular environment within or outside of the cell, identify the physiological limitations, and provide a response through the reaction taking place between the cell and the stimulus. The core functions denoted with cell-based biosensors are their ability to use the active cells as signals. Cell-based biosensors are divided into two fragments; one being from the active cells that are used as the initial converter to sense elements and produce the action potential; and the other consists of the secondary transducer which converts the physiological signals to chemical signals (Wang et al, 2005).

Cell situated biosensors may also detect unanticipated molecules by working with living cells as a sensitive element thus eradicating any limitations. The investigation about cellular microenvironment has become clear and this is owed to the invention of micro fabrication technology of semi-conductor miniaturization of investigative technology (Wang, P. et al. 2005). In biomedicine cell based biosensors are able to identify the existence and concentration of certain substances. Biosensors are able to do this is in a way that scrutinizes the outcome of pharmaceutical compound on specific physiological systems. In general, biosensors based in cells are able to keep living cells under consistent examination thus to study cellular physiological activity when cells are exposed to stimuli. From a biology point of view these biosensors are able to explore many applications within biomedicine for example cell based biosensors are able to execute real-time bioassays swiftly and
