With the realization by most investors that human labor is becoming one of the most important assets that a company and an enterprise can ever own, they are improving workplace design as well as the environment to ensure that workers are as comfortable as possible. It is easier for an individual to work towards the attainment of something or goals and objectives that he or she fully understand rather than working hard towards things that they do not understand. As a result, it is always prudent for the company or those tasked with the duty and responsibility of improving workplace ergonomics to fully understand what ergonomics is, what are its advantages as well as its disadvantages. Ergonomics can be defined as the designing of the workplace and tasks to fit the capabilities of the current workforce. Nevertheless, ergonomics involves a relentless pursuit and continuous efforts to design the workplace for what the staff personnel does well, and design against what the employees do not do well. Thus, it is correct to say that ergonomics focuses on fitting the job to the person to enhance his performance. As the workplace designer or the investor, it is necessary to understand why the enterprise should care about ergonomics, understand the goals of good ergonomics as well as the regulatory requirements. The management needs to:
1) Keenly observe the office environment and the roles and responsibilities to identify potential ergonomic challenges. Observation involves screening for visual indicators or risks that hinder optimization of employee performance in any organization.
2) The management can conduct a formal m ergonomic risk assessment to identify and document sources of risk if they deem it a necessity. Risk assessment may take different forms such as self-assessment and can be crucial in identification and prioritization of potential risk that are likely to hamper the organization. Self-assessment tools may work the best in most situations considering that employees are the best job experts because they are the one who does the job each and every single day.
3) The management should strive to find a potential solution to the identified risks.
It is easier to find solutions to identified challenges compared to finding a solution to unidentified risks and thus, once there is the identification of what needs to be fixed, it is easier to adjust and change the workplace top reduce if not eliminate an imminent risk.
