Fraternity to Youth: Advancement or Abasement? Fraternities were already part of our culture even before our country became independent. According to the book, History and Geography of the Philippine Islands written by Oscar William Coursey, our ancestors formed fraternities in order to gain independence from Spain through revolution. And now that we’re free from colonizers, these organizations are still on their peaks. However, today, many people including the government are already in favor of the intolerance of fraternities. Consequently, the youth insisted that the government should not ban fraternities in order for them to come up with an organization, where they can join to further improve their mental, physical, social, and spiritual skills. As defined by Merriam-Webster, “fraternity is a group of people associated or formally organized for a common purpose, interest or pleasure as a fraternal order, and a guild formed chiefly for social purposes”. These purposes determine whether a certain fraternity is socially-grouped, service-centered, honorary-acclaimed, or professionally-oriented. In addition to that, a fraternity can conduct any activities in accordance with the law that may satisfy the needs of its members, which is the main reason why youth are joining fraternities. They want to fulfill their basic needs, which include their physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization needs. They believe that fraternities are big help in sustaining
