2.1 Geothermal as Renewable Energy
According to Geothermal Resources Council, Geothermal Energy is heat (thermal) derived from the earth (geo). It is the thermal energy contained in the fluids and rocks in the Earth’s crust, calculation show that the earth is originating from a completely molten state, the earth would have cooled and become solid thousand years ago without the thermal heat in addition to support the power of the sun. It is believed that the ultimate source of geothermal energy is radioactive decay occurring deep within the earth. The uses of this kind of energy is influenced by the temperature, the highest temperature of geothermal energy are generally used for electric power generation.

Geothermal energy is a lot cheaper to produce than any other resources, it is even more efficient than the solar energy, and resulting less emission compared to fossil fuels, in other word, geothermal energy is environment-friendly. Some geothermal power plants use the steam from a reservoir to power a turbine/generator, while others use the hot water to boil a working fluid that vaporizes and then turns a turbine. Hot water near the surface of Earth can be used directly for heat. Direct-use applications include heating buildings, drying crops, heating the water at fish farms, growing plants in greenhouses, and several industrial processes such as pasteurizing…show more content…
Indonesia is one of the developing countries that face the increasing demand for electricity by 10% each year (especially in the islands outside Java), and therefore the government needs additional capacity to produce about 6 gigawatts of electricity per year. Indonesia is one of the largest geothermal reserves in the world, hence the government aims to increase the role of geothermal energy as an electricity producer, due to the increased energy demand in Indonesia and because of the population growth combined with the expansion of economic structure, which led to a growing number of middle class and also the growth of industrialization and new investments, the government recently has done efforts to facilitate investment in the geothermal expansion which has long been
