First off I would like to say good morning gentlemen. (As the other delegates said) (In my opinion) joining confederation can solve many of our issues such as our plummeting economy, defence, political issues and building the Intercolonial railway. By joining confederation we could divide the amount of money required to be paid in order to finishing building the Intercolonial railway. By spreading the cost evenly amongst the colonies, the Intercolonial railway to be paid for and begin to operate. In addition to that argument if we finish constructing the railway, the colonies it runs through will have a great increase in their economy because of the rather large amounts of trading that could take place. Finally, by combing our defence strategies
When Confederation happened New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were thinking of joining with the other Maritime provinces to make their own confederation but John A. MacDonald convinced everyone to unify with Ontario. Many people living in the Maritimes didn’t want to join because they were worried about many things like not having an equal voice with Ontario and Quebec. They thought they had enough natural resources like fishing and mining and didn’t need the other provinces. There were positive and negative consequences of Confederation for the people in the Maritimes.
Newfoundland made the right decision in joining Canada in 1949 because in return they were given the promise of prosperity and security due to family allowance, higher standards of living and relief of debt. When Newfoundland joined Confederation, it was by far the the poorest province. Billions of dollars of equalization payments later and investments into the province by the Federal Government, now means Newfoundland is richer than the average Canadian province and has not qualified for equalization payments since 2008. The first reason why Newfoundland made the right decision in joining Canadian Confederation was because Canada relieved Newfoundland of the financial debt burdening it.
In September 1777 on November 15th the Articles of Confederation were adopted by congress. This would be a decision that shaped america for better and worse. In essence the articles of confederation was created because a constitution was needed to link the 13 colonies of America. This planned backfired however, leaving the government and congress without power. Citizens of the U.S were quick to to ratify the Articles in 1779 on may 5th.
The first government in the U.S. was called the Articles of Confederation. It was the first set of laws after the states became independent. The laws in the Confederation were very weak, and they all contracted each other. It also had a weak central/national government because the states didn’t want to give it too much power like the monarchy with the British. Some weaknesses in the first government were that each state no matter how big or small had only one vote, each state could coin its own money, making it hard to move, and lastly, they could not have a military so it would be hard to fight armed rebellions or militias.
Answer: The Articles of Confederation was destined to fail because allowing the states to mainly govern themselves left the central government at the mercy of each state. The central government had the power to control the militia but without the power to draft or tax citizens, it left the government with a weak militia and no money to fund it. That allowed the states to mainly look out for the elite, the wealthy and leave the rest to fend for themselves. After all the Articles of Confederation was written by the wealthy white man to prevent a strong central government from ruling over the states after it detached itself from England. In order to give themselves more power they also took away the possibility for commerce between states and
The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution since the United States of America was formed. This constitution wasn’t helping the states and was causing many arguments between them. After Shay’s Rebellion, when the farmers got mad about having high taxes and heavy debts, even though Shay’s Rebellion didn’t succeed it proved that something has to be done to the Articles of Confederation. What do you think the conclusion will be after the states do something about the Articles of Confederation? The Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan helped create the constitution.
Good evening delegates. We are here today to talk to you about the strengths of the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation are our first attempt at a new government. We are allowed to declare war, peace, and sign treaties with foreign nations, which we were not granted to do under British rule. The Articles of Confederation also enable us to have a say in political matters.
The Articles of Confederation, first adopted in 1781, represented the former colonist’s first attempt to establish a new government after the Revolutionary War. Some of the problems Americans faced after the Revolutionary War were problems with governmental debt that remained when the war was over. Soon Americans started to find disadvantages to the Articles of Confederation, which they considered changes that could possibly improve the economic strengths of the nation, allowing the composition of trade barriers among the states would discourage specialization and lower voluntary trade. The lack of dependable source of revenues for the central government would make it strenuous for the newer nation to defend themselves from attack, which is
Yukon joined the Confederation in 1898 after a gold rush movement boomed. The Canadian government named a second northern territory "Yukon" to show Canada controlled the territory. Saskatchewan also joined the Confederation in the same year with Alberta. Saskatchewan and Alberta was originally planning to unite as one province. However, members of the Confederation considered it was too large for a government to administer.
The Articles of Confederation failed because the articles offered no solutions. Many of these issues did not propose innovation and were primarily conservative providing each state with its own autonomy with minimal influence by the federal government (Schultz, n.d.). This led to multiple disagreements between each state, with each state viewing its own power as a priority over the unity of the Confederation. This created multiple weaknesses within the articles, which includes the following (Articles of Confederation, 2018). Each state, regardless of its size, only had one vote in Congress.
My Fellow Delegates it has become evident that the Articles of Confederation are not functioning for our country. Under this form of government we are too weak and have no power. Our ideals of creating a government where we do not have power to enforce laws, collect taxes, raise an army, or even regulate trade is not functioning. We cannot give our states this much power, we must have more power as a federal government. Seeing that we have a weak federal government, we have a lack of legitimacy and are unable to repay the money we borrowed to fight the Revolutionary War.
1. a) Confederation was the goal of many prominent politicians during the mid 1800’s. What did they hope to achieve and why? a lot of canadian politicians wanted to get all the territories in canada and the goal was to make a country. But because of all the wars that the british french and the first nations people fighting for the land a lot of people from all sides at time people still had treated their enemies in a bad way. The canadian government wanted to create a big country because they thought that if they create a country with a lot of people they thought that they would be a powerful and a strong nation.
Living in Canada at the time of Confederation meant that there were many grievances that were being ignored and it came to a point where they needed to be properly addressed. There were many reasons for why Confederation occurred, but only a few of them were extremely significant. First and foremost, the economy was poor and desperately needed to do better. If small colonies combined, “they would have more taxes and more money to pay their debts as they grew” (Province of Manitoba, 2008).
After declaring of independence from Britain in 1777, the representatives, who participated the Constitutional Congress meetings in 1774, formed together to create the Congress. Power within the Congress believed that creating an official document, a constitution specifically, will create a timeless guide for a beneficial and successful government system for the United States. Not only will that document bring peace between all of the current thirteen-states, but for also the future of America. The first constitution that was officially agreed on was the Articles of Confederation. the Article of Confederation, however, was not as successful as many had thought during the first time it was written.
BACKGROUND In the first week we were introduced on the topic of Canadian confederation. What is the Canadian confederation? Well it is the process in which some British North American provinces Ontario, Quebec, Nova scotia and New Brunswick into one federation called the dominion of Canada, in 1867 Canada got confederation as a country but not complete independence since they could not control their own foreign policy it was still in the hands of Britain. There where some provinces in which wanted the confederation and others who did not.
