Today, the increasing prevalence of private tuition had become a hot debate among Singaporean. According to an article of The Straits Times that appeared on July 07 2015, The Straits Times-Nexus Link had surveyed 500 households and found that 7 in 10 families sent their children for extra classes after school. Besides, the median amount spent on tuition was $155 a month for pre-school, $205 for primary school and $260 for secondary school. The Household Expenditure Survey released last year said families spent a staggering $1.1billion a year on tuition. For instance, in a regular classroom, one teacher will usually face a number of students with different abilities, rate of learning and learning style. Some of them are gifted learners who have a good understanding while some are slow learners who need more time to learn. Moreover, in the aspect of learning style, some may prefer learning using visual such as photos and images while some students may prefer learning using verbal like speech and writing. However, teachers can only teach in the way that fits the majority students’ needs. Hence, those students who are not able to follow the pace will be left behind. These students will find that learning is difficult and started to lose their interest to learn. In short, by attending private tuition classes, students can pick up their missed lesson. Actually, tuition can be more effective if the tutor is not motivated by money only. Recently, no barrier to enter the tuition industry caused more unqualified and incapable people become tutor because of the easy extra money. A good tutor should never forget their responsibilities as a tutor is to identify and minimize or eliminate the learning gaps on respective subject, not to make profit only.
